My stomach muscles ache on your behalf from watching that! It does look so exciting and I know if I did one like that, the adrenaline would be pumping through my veins - it looks like a real thrill! I'm going to have to look up where we can do it round here...! How did your daughter enjoy it?! Vicki was able to bring a friend on this trip, so it was great fun for her. This is her second zipline course, so she's rapidly getting experienced at this sort of thing.

Part of me really wishes I could try that. Part of me is glad I'm too old to do it You're starting to look like a pro, Baz

At the Meteor Crater in Arizona! Ever since seeing a picture of this in school back in 1977, I always wanted to see it with my own eyes. This crater is ENORMOUS! You can't walk all the way around, but if you could it would take an hour or so.

Daughter visited the crater back in the early 2000s, and said it was quite spectacular. I'm glad you got to see it. Were you totally awed by the Grand Canyon? I've seen so many shows about it, but never been there.

Were you totally awed by the Grand Canyon? I've seen so many shows about it, but never been there. It was admittedly spectacular, but just about everything else I saw on the trip was equally spellbinding. Maybe it's just because I've already seen similar sights. I would recommend going if possible, but prices over in Arizona are far higher than anywhere else I've been to. A simple lunch cost $80! My daughter and I took a helicopter tour, and those usually run about $325 for three people- over in Arizona, that money will get you ONE seat. Our hotel room cost $300 a night, but further away (much further, like close to the Utah border) a hotel room only went for $70! I will have more stuff to show later, I'm currently cutting together the highlights reel!

Wow, those prices are steep love. $80 dollars for lunch, that is around £55.00.

Welcome back, Baz! Glad you had a great trip. That crater is spectacular.
I've just finished reading 'The End of the World Running Club' which is a post-apocalyptic novel with the premise that earth gets pelted by asteroids which turn the majority of the landscape into that sort of sight. (Irrelevant info, it's just what I thought of as soon as I saw that picture!)
Steep prices indeed! It's so disappointing when to see something that's part of our natural world, you get fleeced by commercialism!

Steep prices indeed! It's so disappointing when to see something that's part of our natural world, you get fleeced by commercialism! I think in all fairness, the high prices might also be because of the cost to ship goods out to basically the middle of nowhere. It's a LONG drive out there and options are pretty limited! Even the fast food places are costly and close early!

I think that's probably part of it, Baz, but I think location and lack of facilities allows them to charge anything they want. Where else are you going to go? There are some gas stations out in the CA desert that charge half again to twice what regular gas stations charge. When the owners were interviewed, they said they were the only gas around for miles, and if people wanted to be able to buy gas WTH out there, they would have to pay for it. Most bought up to 5 gallons, they said. Just enough to get to a cheaper gas station. They have a captive audience.
Disney World with their $7 hotdogs, and that was back in the 80s. I can only guess what they cost now. But once you check into Disney World, you're not going to fight the traffic to leave and go to a McDonalds, then fight the traffic getting back in. Captive audience.
Bean, when you said the picture reminded you of the book, did you mean the crater or the Grand Canyon, or both?

I this this is very true love but what Cornwall's excuse is I don't know. Everywhere is expensive, even the fish and chips are dearer and not as nice as those we used to get in the Midlands and we are right by the sea!

It was the crater that reminded me of the book as they described travelling from one end of the country to the other (to try to get on a boat that was leaving for a less affected country) but they were just constantly navigating craters like that which makes the journey take a lot longer.
To be fair, I wouldn't want to be living out in the middle of nowhere with little to do and no community, and would want to be paid handsomely for it! But I still think it's sad when so many people are priced out of experiencing certain things, especially where natural wonder is at the heart of it.
I remember when we first arrived in Switzerland, we went to spend the day by a beautiful lake. For lunch we bought a few sausages and some chips between us, just basic fast food. But we paid what we'd have spent on a decent meal out on all four of us here - we were flabbergasted! Our friends (who we stayed with) had warned us it was expensive, but you don't always take it in until it hits you in the wallet!

I think it's one thing to charge a lot for what can only be gotten there, but to just charge a lot for the sake of having a captive audience, that's seems wrong. I agree with Baz that the further something is shipped, or the more difficult it is to ship to an area, the more costly products will be. Hawaii is one of the most expensive. Unlike Alaska, there's no overland route, so everything has to be brought in by ship or plane.
Living in a totally isolated place wouldn't be my choice, though I wouldn't mind having such a place to escape to once in a while. I like living a bit of a drive from everything, but wouldn't want to be so far out I never got to see other people.
I also wouldn't want to be out of communication distance. Even if it's just to call emergency services when needed, I like to be connected when I need or want to be.

Me too hun, I would like less neighbours than we have now but I wouldn't want to be totally isolated. That photo is so awesome Baz love, thank you for sharing it with us. I don't think I have ever seen anything like it. Switzerland is very expensive Bean sweetie but it is somewhere I would love to go.

I've seen so much about Switzerland, and many other places, on travel shows, I almost feel as if I've been there. I would love to see the Alps.

You're right; I figured I was just trying to reckon without the possibility of greed. Call me optimistic about humanity.
