yeh good point Pigjes. All the local papers (mainly all owned by johnson press all over the UK and scotland) have safe ink. (you can tell if its a johnson press newspaper by seeing "part of johnson press" writen at the bottom of the paper on the back). x

My guinea-pigs love paper bags. I fill a paper bag with hay and grass and put it in the run and they get in it and rip it to bits, hide in it and run through it.

Even up to 30 years ago, all stores offered paper bags and little else. Then it went to paper or plastic, and about 5 years ago it became almost impossible to get a paper bag anymore. Chinese restaurants use them for take out orders, or we'd never get any. The girls always know when we got chinese take out, as they get a big paper bag toy. We can buy bundles of brown paper bags at office/retail supply stores, but that takes all the fun out of getting a found toy.

Nobody hands out paper bags here anywhere anymore, I sometimes buy large envelopes to have them play in for a change.

Lunch-sized bags are available at supermarkets, for a sandwich and a soda, but not a Rex. Leaf bags are available at hardware stores, but that would fit a whole herd of Rexes. Good old grocery bags would be great. I cut holes in a cardboard box and gave it to the girls for Christmas. They're having a grand time with it. Instant maze in a box.

I use an old cardboard oatmeal box. I took the plastic off the end and they loved it! I still want to try and make a maze.

You know you're a cavy slave when you see every cardboard container as a possible piggy toy, lol.

These are all great ideas. I've had my piggie for only a month now and have been in need of toy ideas and the like. He doesn't like the store bought toys except for the bird toys with the bells on them.

Hi There, My three boys like to play in and out of the tubes from carpets,as my brother is a carpet fitter he keeps me supplied and if you cut it in shorter lenghts of about4/5 ins and stand them on end it gives them something to nibble on , rather than their hutches as I found out a little to late,oh well never mind they seem happier then they have ever been.I seem to be doing something right for a change. <<HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL>>

Another Hit! Introducing: "The Magic Carpet"You may be asking "What in the world is a Magic Carpet?" and "Where can I get one for my Guinea Pig?" It's Easy to make and you may all ready have the materials needed! 1. Your Favorite Knee Socks - a bit too worn out to wear any longer. 2. Scrap of Fleece 3. Needle & Thread Cut the knee sock at the heel and top band if needed, line with a scrap of fleece, sew up the ends; use a zig-zag or overcast stitch. Give to your eagerly awaiting guinea pig, and she will go for a slumber on her magic carpet! Thanks to Reese for modeling "The Magic Carpet" (one size does not fit all, but don't tell her that).

I never ever ever ever ever would have thought of the jeans. I'm going to have to try that since I just outgrew a pair of my jeans. Also the hammock is a great idea. I will try that too. It seems a ton cheaper than buying a $15 ferret hammock from the pet store. Wonderful ideas everyone!! here is a link that I have found very helpful: www.ehow.com/how_4793176_guinea-pig-toys.html

oooh, I should add "The Car Wash"! Cut a piece of fleece into strips on one side and drape it over the top of a cube grid or hidey opening for piggies to run through. so much fun!!!

Oh "The Car Wash" is such a hit, I can't not add it to the cage - if I forget the girls are like "hello? lady, you forgot something!!!" as if I'm a waitress that served the food without silverware. - spoiled pigs.

With the hammocks, do you just leave them low enough for them to get in?
And are they more of a play thing, or a sleep/lounging area?

Hi Bits - my girls LOVE the hammocks - sleeping, lounging, eating, playing.... say if Gigi wants to get away from her annoying sisters its a good place to do that...but the'll find her. in my thread wheekers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pigchat&action=display&thread=10990 i have a cute video i hang mine just high enough to hop into...the ready made ferret ones are too high, so I added some red ribbon to extend the loops.
