Strawberry left us last night. I'm not really sure what happened.
That afternoon, he had been running around the cage with Opie, fighting over the water bottle, and putting his paws on the cage bars, wheeking for veggies. We left for a friend's house at 6:00 to have supper and small groups, which is something our church does every Sunday night. We stayed visiting for quite awhile and arrived back home at around 10:00. I found Strawberry flopped on his side on the cage floor, unable to get up. I called Ben, who Strawberry belongs to, who lifted him out of the cage. Memories came flooding back from the night Hoppy died - the same limp body, the wide confused eyes, the panicked muscle spasms.
We wrapped him in a blanket and eventually he calmed down. We brought him into the living room and took turns holding him. I'll never forget the way he looked at me with his big, ruby eyes and the way he rested his little chin on my leg. His breathing started to become more labored, and at midnight he breathed his last in Ben's lap.
---
We miss you Strawberry, but I know that the skinny, stiff little body we buried this morning wasn't you. You're up with Hoppy, Midi, and all the rest of our little family who have left us, chomping down grass. Say hi to them all for me, and be sure you're fattened up good when I come up there. I would love to see a chubby Marshmallow Ears.

I'm sorry to hear that, Merry, but I know he had a wonderful time with you and his final photos with Opie were lovely. Take care and hugs to you and Opie.
