Recently I was moving my pigs from the "pigatorium" (what my husband calls the kiddie pool they reside in during the day!) to their sleeping cage when I heard the most amazing sound! At first I thought a bird had come down the chimney or somehow gotten in the house, or that the sound came from the TV. It was LOUD and sounded exactly like a big bird singing away. Turns out it was my girl Bordeaux standing tall, little mouth wide open, making the most incredible and unusual noise I have ever heard a piggie make! I had to get everyone else in the house to come and listen so they would believe me. She "sang" for about 3 minutes and then went about her business as if nothing had happened. I went to the internet to look up if anyone else had ever heard such a thing. I found two references to "chirping" and "the guinea pig song" and both described the same sound and both stated that they had only heard one of their pigs do it only once and had never again heard this lovely sound. It seems I am very lucky to have ever heard it at all and I probably never will hear the song again. Neither one of those lucky enough to hear it knows why the pigs "sing". I just know that it was so lovely and special. Has anyone out there ever heard their pig do this?!!

Oh its wonderful to hear Beth, I've heard my Sweetpea do it twice, I felt so lucky that I was there both times. It really does sound like a bird dosn't it ;D Here is a link to Treen's site where you can hear little Ziggy chirping www.treenspigs.com/fun/media.html

Isn't it a bizarre sound?! As Jackie mentioned, my little Zigs was a chirper and I heard him a few times. I was so glad I managed to record it one time - he was really in to it that time and carried on even after I'd picked him up (the other times he'd stop when he saw someone come in to the room).
The first time he did it, we were asleep upstairs and I thought it was a car alarm going off outside at first! After a while I investigated and found it was one of my pigs and I was so shocked they could make that noise!

Aww I'm glad you like it Beth ;D It must be over a year now since I last heard my Sweetpea sing, I remember her little lips going in and out as though she was whistling. I know their mouths can do that with a 'wheek', I especially notice it with my Jasmine as her wheek is a very high pitch. Hopefully I'll get a recording of their different sounds .

That is a strange and wonderful sound. My Leo did it twice. The first time it was the strangest thing. He was out for play pen time, and the rest of the pigs in the room stopped dead. They all just froze and listned to every little sound he made.
They are such unique little critters.
Hey Treen, I hope you remember me. This is Monica Van Horn. Furryfactory & Caleb's cavy cave. I hope you and your pigs are well.

Hi Monica! I love hearing that other pigs like Leo "sing" and that I'm not nuts! I hope Dodo does it again as it was so lovely and haunting- like the sirens or something. Hope to hear more from you and your piggies!

I know Bordeaux was happy and healthy when she sang, but did you see on "Bing's" site where there was a letter about some pigs on Animal Planet that they made sing by aggrevating them? I swear she wasn't distressed when she did it, but I feel badly for those pigs that they made do it. I really think it's a wonderful, magical thing they do for some unknown reason. So cute Cavy13, that your Sally is a mimic! I try to "talk" to Bordeaux in piggie language and she cocks her little head and tries to "talk" to me too. I do have to remember what each noise means so I don't "say" something dumb!

I haven't seen the show but I thought the 'singing' pigs on that were pigs having their fur pushed the wrong way rather hard so they cried out huge wheeks in time with the music? Sounded horrible, and nothing like the chipring kind of singing.
Fred's always very responsive if you copy the noises she makes lol. She's the noisiest out of my lot, but hasn't added chirping to her repertoire!

I swear. what is WRONG with people?! Who would want to hurt a little piggie like that?! I'd like to make those people "sing" - for mercy!
