[glow=lime,2,300]Im getting 2 more piggies, a friend for each I have now. I know pet shops are bad and feed stores are probably worse. But I just feel so bad for these little guys! I feel like getting them from a feed store is like rescueing them! They are probably so much happier at a rescue than a feed store or pet shop. Why not help one of those piggies out too? I was planning to adopt one and get the other one from these feed store because I cant stand to see them in there.
They have them in a tiny wooden box with about 20 pigs. I called to ask prices and types. The lady told me they have 18 short hair and 2 long hair. The price was 10 dollars and when I asked about sexes the girl goes "Um I dont know I guess we have boys and girls in the cage." I also asked if they were all adults and she said no they have a few babies in there too.
I cant help but want to save these poor little guys!!!
Is it really that bad to get one form a feed store?[/glow]

I got my girls from a lousy pet store after trying to find some to rescue without success. We just don't have as many here in the USA. I too felt like I was "rescuing" them from that place! But beware: the girls will probably be pregnant like my Milano already was at 3 months.

I tell you why not Timscavypricess... because you are not rescuing them... you are adding to the problem. Its great for the 1 pig... but many more take his place with your cash. You are just fueling the back breeding, breeding to order, farm type machine. i know its EASIER to get from a pet store & have done it many many times myself... and if you want to buy from there ot is your choice & you will not be condemned... but it would be so much nicer if you could adopt from a shelter or rescue instead wouldn't it? Then you know you are helping out... I know its hard to turn away from piggys waiting in a pet shop (which is why I never go in one!)

Thats lovely... I know of a few piggys rescued from a pet store. One gorgeous boy who was getting older & being over looked & had mites. He was lovely. I know there are exceptions... and you have done a nice thing

[glow=lime,2,300]Since im going to get 2 more I thought maybe I could rescue one and buy the other. Just so I can give one a home who is looking and give another a better life than he/she has had so far! Give them a life where people dont come in and poke it then leave. There arnt too many rescues in my area. Or I love a pair of pigs, the only problem with that is they would need to be split up to go with my other 2. I would rather get 2 single than 1 pair. Im getting a friend for each of my two because they need to be seperated. If I get a pair then I will have 3 in a cage and 1 by itself.[/glow]

I agree with Susie, don't be tempted to "rescue" the pigs.. maybe ask if you can have them (them giving them to you, no pay). You are adding to the problem. You may think what you are doing is good but it just supports and encourages the pet shop to continue selling of that animal. Not to mention the numerous stories of animals being brought home and them having health problems and illnesses right after. (ie PETCO)

It is all such a dilemma! I just want them ALL to come live with ME wherever they are from! One doesn't want to encourage pet stores or breeders but here in the US it is tough to find true rescues. I can not even go into most pet stores here because I can't bear to see the little piggies. What IS a compassionate person to do?

It is difficult isn't it. Sometimes ringing up animal welfare charities can help to point you in the right direction or ask your vet if they know of any guinea pig rescues. Not all rescues are advertised, sometimes you just find them by word of mouth.
A good idea to hopefully close down a bad pet store is to report them to the local authority. I know it can pull at your heart strings when you see piggies kept in awful conditions, but like a few have mentioned, they'll just get hold of even more piggies who then have to live in the same conditions. The best thing you can do is report these awful pet stores.

There are many rescues in the us! Mamy are on the net. Its really not that hard but obviously MUCH harder than just popping down to the pet shop. I'd always do what best rather than whats easiest in all things

[glow=lime,2,300]I stopped by the feed store the other day and talked about seperating males from females. I went back in today to check on them and they actually listened! They made another pen and seperated by sexes, I was so happy! I also printed some care sheets out for them so I will be checking soon.[/glow]

I am guilty of a Pet store animal. Bazz, my gorgeous little lad had been there for a number of months and was 9 months old by the time I got him out of there.
If I saw a pig in real need I'd have no problems taking it from a Pet store. To be honest, we're a long way off from shutting Pet stores down. Each animal acquired there (including dogs, cats and Rabbits) means a life in a shelter is lost. People know full well there are animals in the shelter waiting for homes, but they want Puppies, Kittens.. it's not fair for any animal.
I don't see any problem with getting Pet store pigs if you must, but if you can find pigs needing homes in shelters I would offer those a home first. Maybe your guilt can be satisfied with this thought: once you save these pigs from the store, they will just be replaced, and have to live in the shocking conditions with the 18 that you couldn't take home. Adopt your pigs if you can, and help educate your pet stores..

Good job TCP! They REALLY listened? Amazing Now at least all the little girls won't be having a few big surprises for whomever gets them! That's how Milano ended up preggers at 3 months.
