I have two four year old male guineas. They have crazy little personalities and one of them loves to "ting" their water dish for attention. I think it was this that has resulted in him breaking his teeth almost to the gum. Poor little guy isn't in pain but he has trouble eating unless I cut everything up into tiny pieces. Just wondering if his teeth will grow back and how long might that take. As I type this he is still happily "tinging" on his dish and popcorning around. Should I take that dish out?

One of my boys broke his top teeth in a fight with his cage mate... I had to cut up everything super tiny for about two weeks... He likes to play tug of war with me when I hand feed him mint leaves... So as soon as he was able to bite it off and win again I knew I could go back to normal size pieces!

Check whether the root is still firm; in that case the tooth should regrow within 1-2 weeks without problems. Otherwise you may need to see a vet. Please weigh him daily during that time. www.guinealynx.info/teeth_broken.htmlTake the dish out if it gets on your nerves, otherwise, leave it.

Poor little chum, I know what it is like to be short of teeth, I hope he is OK.
Hugs

Hello and welcome. I'd love to see pictures of your babies! I agree with Yodelpig, and hope his roots are intact. It might be a good idea to have his teeth checked by a cavy savvy vet, just in case the dish isn't the reason for the breakage, and he has other teeth problems. Best to catch teeth problems early!
Consider replacing the dish with a plastic one, or go with a water bottle, so he doesn't have this problem again. Also, make sure he has plenty of noisy things to chew. Pigs need to chew to keep their teeth worn down, but they love to make noise when they chew. Paper, cardboard, anything that makes noise works.
If you go with the bottle, fill it completely to the top, no air space, to create a vacuum. I had many bottles vent all their water until someone clued me in on that! Also use something to attach it securely to the cage, or the pigs will pull on the bottle and release it, to make noise.
