I've only had Lily a week and we are already off to the vet. She has a patch of fur missing by her eye and scratch marks like she's been itching at it. It's gotten worse in the last day or two, so I figure I must get it checked out. And the only exotic animal vet in town doesn't get back from vacation until Friday. What can I expect when taking a piggie to the vet? I'm sure it's no different than when I take my dog or cat in. I'm planning on taking her in a small dog crate (the smallest they make), lined with a puppy potty pad. That's the only thing I have to transport her. Do you think that'll be okay? Anything I should be prepared for in transporting her? (Hopefully she won't be like my dog--my dog can't travel in kennels in the car because she gets carsick--seatbelted in she is fine, but in the kennel she gets sick every single time).

That sounds fine, a small pet carrier is perfectly adequate for taking your pig to the vet. The more enclosed the better to reduce stress while waiting - often with other animals around - in the clinic. Try not to have any other objects in the carrier lest they move around during transit. A little bit of hay in there with her is fine tho.
As far as the hair loss most vets should be able to deal with something like that. He/she may do a skin scrape or trial with a particular ointment, or consider treating for mites if there are other lesions present and depending on how it looks.

Best of luck with your vet visit. Unfortunately, it sounds like a classic case of ringworm - very widely spread in stressed out shop piggies! You can reclaim the vet cost from your pet shop. It is the only way to get them to clean up their act! www.guinealynx.info/fungus.htmlgorgeousguineas.com/indentification.htmlgorgeousguineas.com/photogallery.htmlPlease be aware that ringworm is highly contagious and can spread to other pets and humans. You need an antifungal disinfectant (the normal ones only kill bacteria) and use extra hygiene. Please be aware that you can spread ringworm through your clothing, too. Any fabric needs to be washed at a minimum of 60 C. You will find that things get worse before they get better, as the affected hair/hair roots of the surrounding area need come out first before the patch can heal off.

Well, it wasn't ring worm. The vet just thinks it was an infection. maybe where she got scratched or scratched herself. She's on antibiotics, probiotic, and has some ointment. She did fabulously at the vets. Was super good and sweet (didn't like having her eye looked at). Then when we was waiting for the vet, she fell asleep in my arms.

Aw, that is so sweet, falling asleep in your arms! I'm glad it's not ringworm, just because of the precautions you have to take dealing with it. I hope the meds work quickly!

She is doing much better. Today during floor time, she was popcorning like crazy. And then later, she was running laps around her cage.
