Probably most places have seen shipping prices increase, and I expected that, but was totally floored when I went to order more hay from Kleen Mama. I used to buy 45 pounds for a total cost+shipping of about $67. Because I have a smaller space that doesn't quite fit the 45 pound box, I ordered 25 pounds. Hay+shipping came to $84, and I wasn't even getting the full contingent of hay!
I ordered 20 pounds from Small Pet Select, came to $46. The difference is with KM, I can choose the cut and type of hay. I would have bought 3rd cut Timothy. With SPS, I get Timothy. So I'm hoping SPS will have good hay, at least better than the bagged stuff in the pet stores. It should arrive in about a week, and I'll post about it.
As for the shipping cost difference, I think SPS is fairly local, possibly even Massachusetts, while I think KM is out in the mid/north west part of the US. I think the difference is just the distance to ship it. Fingers crossed that SPS will have great hay, too!

I just smiled when I read your words. Massachusetts (fairly local) is a song the beegees sang and dollar sign instead of the pound. We are just a few written words away for communicating , yet your in America and I'm in a tiny village in Scotland, quite amazing - never mind the hay xxxx

And I'm down under! It is amazing! I can't get cheap hay anywhere! 4kg box of oxbow is $80... And local hay is horrible! Either soft and brown or spiky and green... I live in a rural area for goodness sake! I've resorted to moderately priced interstate hay at $50 for 6kg... It's the shipping that's a killer! I haven't got a lot if money, but I don't want to give my boys junk either... But... On a side note... I did just order our first gorgeous Guineas shampoo. I found a supplier in Australia with reasonable pricing! I can't wait for it to arrive!

When I ordered about a month ago from KM, the prices seemed the same, but I'm in Texas so shipping it here might not be as expensive. I need to order pellets soon, so I guess I'll find out if it's higher. I certainly hope not!

I buy regular hay locally in a big warehouse store calle The Range. It's not fantastic but it's perfectly good enough and £4.99 for a great big bag. And its not too compressed, meaning I can actually just about get it out of the bag in handfuls! I also buy Timothy hay at the vets - its a bit more expensive than can be found online, but at least I can go and collect it at a convenient time and save the shipping costs! I only have a small house so three or four bags of hay is all I can store at once. Buying hay by the bale is not really an option!

KM is superior hay, no doubt about that. Even the Oxbow Western Timothy at the stores is full of brown, thick, pokey pieces, so by the time I sort out all I don't even want in their cage, I've removed a good quarter of it. I can also tell the difference by the way the pigs tuck into the KM, and give me that "really?" look with the bagged stuff. Wow and OY to the down under prices. Shipping is the problem, as the hay itself isn't overly expensive. I think I get a better per pound price, shipping included, if I buy the 45 pound box, but I don't have any place to keep it anymore. May have to rearrange, if this latest hay isn't really great. Monkeyandthechimp, can you get a bale of local field hay for less? Some farmers even grow timothy hay, but as long as you don't use alfalfa, any hay that's available in quantity is good. I was paying $100 for a 50 pound box of timothy, when a full bale of field hay was $7. Too freaking old to heft a bale of hay anymore Yes, the Beegees did a song about Massachusetts! Kind of nice to have a song done by a major group

Yes, I'm too freaking old too but I found a good cheap shop that sells good hay 3 kilos for £3. The very same one at the local pet shop is £6 (9dollars). But get my hubby to go and buy quite a few at a time xx he's freaking old but stronger than me!

If I have to buy locally again, I would buy from the feed/grain store only because I know where and how they store their hay, and it's not bagged or boxed months in advance and allowed to get moldy. I've had too many moldy boxes from Petco and Pet Smart, and for more than the fresher hay costs. Again, I have to get a big box to save any money, but until I see the quality of the Small Pet Select hay, I'm not going to worry about it. Just really wish KM hadn't raised their rates so much!
