This is more an interesting bit of information for horse owners, than anything else. A friend of mine had two horse, very closely bonded friends, for many years. One recently died very unexpectedly, so she looked for just the perfect new horse to bring home as a friend for the remaining horse. Found the perfect horse, brought her home and when my friend unloaded the horse from the trailer, the remaining horse had a nervous breakdown!!! Flat out fell over on her side and was about to call it quits! The vet was called, and she was calmed and all worked out. The two ladies are quickly becoming friends, but it was the strangest thing any of us who own/owned horses have ever seen!

Good grief that could have gone disastrously wrong. Aren't animals funny, we think we know them but not really. Glad the horses got on in the end x

I just thought I would mention it because it's one more example of animal emotions, and some people think they don't! Seen it so many times, but this was an extreme example!

That is really strange love and I know some people do not agree but I am sure that all animals have emotions.

Thank you for sharing this interesting story! It's not uncommon for horses to form close bonds with their pasture mates, and the loss of a friend can be very difficult for them. Introducing a new horse to the herd can be a delicate process, and it's not always smooth sailing. Sometimes, a new horse may disrupt the social dynamics of the group, which can cause stress and anxiety for the existing horses.
In your friend's case, it's possible that the sudden appearance of a new horse was overwhelming for the remaining horse, who may have been grieving the loss of her friend. This could have triggered a stress response that caused her to fall over. It's fortunate that the vet was able to provide assistance and that the two horses are now getting along well.
