We just finished watching Midnight Mass on Netflix. It's set on a sleepy little island. The islanders are expecting their priest to return from a pilgrimage, but when he's replaced by a younger priest, strange things start happening to people - a paralysed girl starts to walk again, people start looking younger and being cured of long term ailments. But the happenings are not all good...
It was an interesting idea and pretty entertaining (with a few jumpy bits) although my son gave up halfway through as he thought there were too many long emotional monologues and not enough action in each episode! I could see his point, I'd probably have trimmed a few scenes too!

Ah, from the director of The Haunting of Hill House. That explains why it was so interesting, and not predictable. I need action to keep my attention, too and can skip long monologs. Glad you enjoyed it. The Haunting of Hill House is on your face scary.

We read The Haunting of Hill House at book group a couple of years ago, and I think I watched an old film of it, but I haven't seen the series. I'll have to look out for it when I've recovered from this one haha! But yes, it Midnight Mass did go in a different direction to the obvious one a few times, which was refreshing.

I saw the movie, The Haunting of Hill House, but never saw the TV series. I didn't even know there was one. Quick google, and I see there was a mini series. I think getting it out of the way all at once is preferrable to dragging it out over several days I've seen The Haunting, based on the book, both the 1999 film and the 1963 film, plus 1999 House on Haunted Hill, also based on The Haunting of Hill House. Rose Red is similar to The House on Haunted Hill, though done with typical Stephen King plotting and effects. Nothing at all like The Shining, though.

I managed to visit my buddy Ken last night and we watched the new Matrix movie. We both enjoyed it; it was a superior conclusion to the previous film ("Revolutions") and gave the fans what they wanted. If you haven't seen the other films, a newcomer isn't going to be able to follow the storyline, so if this wasn't your cup of tea the first time around you can skip this one.
(This is different from Mad Max 4, as someone could view that film without ever having seen any of the previous installments.)

I saw the first one when it came out, but couldn't tell you a thing about it! Is this new one the film that uses loads of CGI or whatever it is they use in gaming for 'real life' looks?

Sort of- the way it's explained is that the world as we know it is just a digital construct, and the real world is an apocalyptic nightmare where people are stored in electronic pods, and their brains tell them they're existing in the digital world, unless they wake up and escape their pod. The original 1999 film was a monster hit with people around my age; I recall lots of youngsters walking around dressed in long black coats wearing sunglasses indoors. Also, the original film used a color scheme to tell the audience when they were in the computer world and when they were in the real world. (The digital world had a green tint, while the real world had a blue cast to it.)

I think I've seen them all, so am interested in seeing the latest one. I'll wait for it to come on TV, which I realize greatly limits the special effects quality, but I just don't go to the cinema anymore. Glad you got to see it, and with someone who appreciates it as much as you do

Glad you got to see it, and with someone who appreciates it as much as you do I'll say no more so as not to spoil anything, but the third film "Revolutions" left me with a bad taste, and this fourth film made up for that.

I'm trying to remember if I've seen Revolutions, and if I have, I don't remember it. Not remembering is nothing for me, but I have to do some research to remind me or verify that I haven't seen it.

I'm trying to remember if I've seen Revolutions, and if I have, I don't remember it. Not remembering is nothing for me, but I have to do some research to remind me or verify that I haven't seen it. The bulk of the movie takes place outside the Matrix, and this is the film where we see the robots invade Zion. While the movie is quite a spectacle, it wasn't as much fun as the previous two movies. I imagine seeing it will be a good setup for the fourth film. While the first one is still the best, I really enjoyed the first sequel (Reloaded) for its amazing action sequences and eye-catching imagery. The highway chase still blows me away every time I watch it. This is barely a quarter of the scene, but the motorcycle going the wrong way makes my heart skip a beat! (For those who haven't seen this, the characters are operating inside a computer simulation, so the laws of physics & gravity do not apply.)

Love that scene, and most of the action scenes. The Ducati served them well I definitely remember Reloaded

Haven't seen the last Matrix. I enjoyed the original ones and i read quite bad reviews about the latest one... so, i decided to skip it so far. In November i entered the cinema for the first time in 3 years and watched Dune. I absolutely loved it and i can't wait for the next one! I haven't read the books yet, but i hope to find the pleasure in reading again. There is also a funny story related to the movie... I watched the movie in Original Version, but Danish subtitles. Everything was fine, until we reached the parts where the actors are talking alien language and the translation is of course in Danish. As a side note, i don't really speak danish...i can get the idea of a written text, but i need time for that. The friend i was with, was trying to quietly and quickly translate the things into english. Needless to say, that it didn't really work out. Yesterday, i had a lazy day and watched on Netflix, Little Women. A bit too slow for me, but it is with both Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet and i really like them... Overall, i enjoyed it quite some.

Baz is a Dune buff, so he'll be able to talk to you about it. I haven't seen Little Women, but I read the book, and while sweet in a lot of ways, it was slow, too. My old brain has gotten too slow for subtitles. I used to love movies with subtitles, too. Glad you got to the cinema, and enjoyed Dune

Judging from I've read from the negative reviews of Matrix 4, it seems most of the dissatisfied crowd was hoping for mind-blowing action sequences. While it has scenes of action, the film is a bit more personal and intimate, focusing on the main characters & their relationships. Since each film has its own focus & themes, it seems appropriate to me. It helps give a proper form of closure that the third film lacked.

I agree with your assessment, but like the mind-blowing action scenes

We just finished watching Katla, an Icelandic drama about a volcanic eruption leading to people emerging from the volcano covered in ashes - some are people who have died over the years (including a child), others are people who are still very much alive, whether they live locally or have been living in other countries for decades. One attentive husband didn't even notice there were two versions of his wife in the house!
I'm not sure I'd recommend it as it certainly had some pitfalls as a drama, but it was a really interesting idea, and also slightly confusing!

That should have had commentaries on so many things. Sounds exciting. I imagine some people decided all the volcano people were evil, and tried to kill them, while others were happy to see them back among the living.

There'd long been myths about changelings appearing during eruptions before in this area, but we were still quite surprised at how quickly people accepted it the doppelgangers. There were a few deaths though, yes!

I think how deeply we love people can challenge our judgment about them. Just as we refuse to accept those who are different from us, we willingly accept those we think we know and love, just to have them back among us. At least it's that way with some people, and those who are steeped in the superstitions and myths will believe it more readily.
