You are probably right Piggles love, there maybe an entirely different decision made later on behind the scenes.

Dear stateside friends,
Completely unrelated to what's gone before but I'm watching NHL ice hockey on the sports channel and it looks pretty amateurish. It's not what I'm expecting.
On the ice it says Los Angeles All Stars and the team names are Metropolitan and Atlantic. Earlier Pacific and Central were playing. The play is so slow and non-physical.
What's all this about?
Confused in China!

If you watched the all-star games, they are players from several different teams in a specific league all chosen to play on one all-star team. They should make super teams, but it doesn't seem to work that way. I didn't watch the NHL all-star games, but I tried to watch the football Pro-bowl, and it was so broken up by endless airings of the same ads, and by flashes over to the analysts booth so they could interview a veteran player who stopped by, make some comment about the game we weren't being allowed to watch because of all the breaks, etc. I gave up and watched Simcha Jacobovici searching for Atlantis. At least that had a lot of really great scenery in it.
I have trouble watching motion on TV, and have found it hard to follow the hockey puck, just as I find it hard to follow the ball in a soccer game, or to follow the players running back and forth in a basketball game. I think that's why I like football. My eyes and brain can handle the speed and amount of action. Sorry I can't tell you more about US hockey, or if the games should have been more exciting.

That would explain why it was like an exhibition match with no tackling to avoid injuries and the like. So boring. Switched it over to the women's boxing

Yes, it's that time of year, with a lot of sports wrapping up their main season, and having exhibition-type games to pad the season. Other sports are just starting their new seasons, and having exhibition-type games to test all their new players. Sunday is the football Superbowl game, which ends the football season. Not sure when hockey season ends.

Switched it over to the women's boxing I tried watching a women's boxing match back in the late 80's; It was a spectacle I will never forget. The two women weighed about 130 pounds each, and were in top shape... and they went the full ten rounds, managing to break each other's noses and end up with four black eyes. Their fronts of their shirts were covered in blood. They were strong enough to absorb tons of punishment, but not heavy enough to deliver the knockout blow. I never found the courage to watch any more after that.

We have a local professional boxer who I think is ace - Nicola Adams. She did pretty well at the Olympics. She's just so lovely and smiley - I've never seen her fight though!

I find boxing brutal although I admire those tough enough to stand up to it. It is amazing how beautiful some of these sports ladies are when you see them all dressed up, you wouldn't recognise them.

I, too, find boxing or fighting in general to be too brutal for me. Hubby was following an American boxer, Rhonda Rousey I think her name is, who was unbeatable for a while. That winning streek ended, as they always do, but I think she set some records while she was winning.
I am glad to see women boxing and doing mixed martial arts fighting. There's really no reason why they can't, but they're generally considered male sports. Winning, or being in the top competitions, pays well, and there's no reason why women shouldn't be getting their share of the winnings. I think some men feel it violates their ideal of women as the weaker sex, needing to be protected, but that's never really been true, anyway. Women played crucial roles, even on the battle fields, in pretty much all of our wars in the last 400 years, whether they were loading cannons and guns, doctoring the injured, cooking the food and boiling the bandages, or acting as spies.

I don't get why people would want to smack each other about the head, and don't enjoy watching it!
We watched the new netflix series of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. We really enjoyed it and Neil Patrick Harris (or Doogie Howser as I still call him) is fantastic as Count Olaf, it's really good fun! They've done the first four books (there are 13 in the series) so I hope they make more.

Nor me Bean love, I wince at every strike. I think women doing martial arts is fine, I think I I were an awful lot younger I may take it up. I don't like seeing women part take in masculine sports either and I always think they are gay which isn't always the case at all. I agree Piggles hunni, in many ways we are much tougher than men

The Lemony Snickert series are some of the darkest books for children. I remember when they became popular. THere was a lot of coverage about the fact the children didn't want all their books to be about princes, princesses and happy endings. They wanted issues, excitement and pretty much all the things adults want in a story, just at their age level. I saw that movie, and it really was a series of unfortunate events. I kept thinking it couldn't get any worse, and then it did.
I don't like fighting, nor do I watch it, but I do understand it. Getting to be really good at anything is an accomplishment. Getting out of the ghetto is a huge accomplishment. Fighting accomplished both for those who are really good. Music did for some, acting for others. I think it's rare to see a really wealthy person from a top family, who had a fabulous education and every opportunity, fighting or rapping to earn money.
Martial arts are a bit different, as they come with a mentality, not just with moves. Mr. Miyagi and the Karate Kid are a perfect example. It's a discipline, so those who really excel at that are in a different group.

That is a good point Piggles hun, martial arts is for training the mind as well as the body. I love the Karate Kid films. I think that some boxers look really dumb but I suppose anyone would in the poses they have to take for the camera.

Aw, that's too bad, Jo. It's about using robotic spy animals to infiltrate animal groups, and see what they do when we're not watching. They had a spy penguin, spy bird, spy chimp, spy prairie dog, spy tortoise, etc., and set them amoung the animals they were supposed to be. Interesting, when the spy tortoise was put with the chimps, one adopted him and fought off the others who were interested. Hard to tell if the chimp was protecting him or hoarding him, but he was definitely not letting the other chimps even touch him. It's a series, so more this coming week.
Superbowl is on tonight. Hubby is picking up Chinese food on his way home from food shopping. I have a feeling he should skip the food shopping until tomorrow, as the last minute rush to get superbowl snacks should make the supermarkets unbearable. He can always stop on his way home from work tomorrow, as we only need about 4 things.

Thank you piggles hun, I hope they repeat the whole series because I would love to see them all. Apparently there was one where an Elephant was having a tantrum, that I would love to see. Hope you enjoyed your super bowl and chinese take away. Paul loves Chinese whereas I prefer Indian.

The Superbowl was incredible. The score was 20-3 at halftime, with our team lagging way behind their rival. Second quarter brought our team alive and ended the game with a tie score. A few minutes into over time our team scored a touchdown, and won the Superbowl. It was amazing. None of us thought they could come back from a 28 point deficit, but they did. I think the bet takers are scrambling today, as that didn't go the way they set the odds to go, at all! Watching BBCWN coverage of the Superbowl, this morning, the announcer told people not to write the New England Patriots off and go off to watch something else. He said, "You already did that with the Brexit vote and the US presidential election. Haven't you learned anything?" It was great, and gave me a great chuckle Let's just say this Superbowl is one for the record books. No team ever came back from more than a 10 point deficit, and there has never been overtime in a Superbowl game. Interestingly, my two favorite football teams are the Seattle Seahawks, and the New England Patriots. There are two brothers, Michael and Martellus Bennett. Michael plays for the Seahawks, and Martellus plays for the Patriots. It was good to see my Seahawk congratulating his Patriots brother after the game, last night

Glad the Superbowl was so enjoyable - hope it's given lots of people a good boost at a time when it's much needed! Hope the Chinese was as nice as expected too.
