I'm slowly converting Harry & Weasley from Oxbow Young Guinea Pig Cavy Performance to Small Pet Select Timothy Hay kibble. They eat Oxbow's food first and will actually spit out the Small Pet Select's food until they realize there is no more Oxbow food in the dish. They will then eat the Small Pet Select food.
So here is my question...are they being picky because they like the alfalfa hay (Oxbow) kibble better than the timothy hay (Small Pet Select) kibble? Or are they being picky because they like Oxbow better than Small Pet Select?
What are your thoughts and experiences in converting from alfalfa to timothy hay kibble?

It could be either, and they can't be any more specific. Mine liked the SPS pellets, but mine eat anything. Try doing just the new pellets, even if you just give them a tablespoon. See if they care, once they don't have a choice.

I just bought 50 pounds of having and three large bags of pellets, so I'm all set. It's a great coupon

I've had a few experiences of switching from alfalfa to timothy pellets as pigs have got older - some don't seem to notice, other try to hold out at first to see if the alfalfa ones will come back!
I view it like I do with my kids if they're being a bit fussy - I figure if they're hungry, they'll eat eventually, so there's no point worrying or pandering to them! I am a mean old mum though.

My piggies like Small Pet Select's timothy hay too, Silamb. The bags of KayTee and Oxbow they rejected -- too dried out. Since I switched to SPS, I have a hard time keeping their hay bin full!

I know that situation, Bongosfriend Mine love nothing better than a good wallow in the hay, bulldoze it around the cage, etc. I have been limiting how much I put in at one time, as adding more as needed. That way they don't pounce in it, toss it around and use it all as a bathroom. Mine have been on Oxbow pellets as long as I've had guinea pigs. I have tried KMS Hayloft pellets and hay, and SPS pellets and hay, and they all went over just as well. None of my pigs like anything from Kaytee except the treats, which are full of sweetener. I have been lucky not to have finicky pigs.

Thank you everyone! The boys are now 100% on Small Pet Select and are eating it just fine.
Random thought I was thinking this week while watching my boys in Hogwarts...why are they drawn to the healthy pellets if it is just hay with added minerals and vitamins? I mean, I understand it with the stuff full of sugary things or if it were alfalfa, but when it is timothy hay based pellets that are with limited additives, what draws them?

Ours make little nests in their piles of hay, they look so cute. They are either in the hay or in their cuddle cups.

It isn't just hay squashed into a pellet. It has other flavors, and I think it's just a treat for them.
