I will miss the pictures of Deo, when you run out. Luckily, I still have a few more- I'll post again in a few days. In the meantime, I'm trying to get a particular picture of Theodore- he's playing with one of those wicker balls, and as he unravels it, it somehow gets tangled around him so it looks like he's wearing a belt! Unfortunately every time I run and grab the camera he's scurried off into his pigloo. He certainly is a skittish beast, even more so than Oscar!

Theodore looks guilty, as he was caught in the act of snacking! This guy is so photogenic. I love his eyes and expression.

Another splendid picture of Deo! (Yes, I'm still missing him.) One of Oscar gnawing away at a hanging treat! (Oddly, Oscar loves these but Deo always ignored his. Theodore occasionally gnaws at his, but Oscar will strip the treat clean in a few days.) Theodore is all bundled up in my daughter's lap!

Wonderful pictures I noticed that my Morty has the same expression as Deo, that smiling, bright eyed look. Love that look

Deo munching away at an apple from the tree in our yard! (The little orange stain on his nose was from the baby food we were feeding him.) My daughter took this one a year ago of Oscar, who as usual, is posed so dramatically! Theodore is finally enjoying his hanging treat!

They're not really so great for guinea pigs really (sorry Baz!) - seeds are higher in calories than they need, they can get stuck in their teeth and cause discomfort and can also (although in my mind it's not a massive risk) be a choking hazard. They also often have things like honey used in the gunk that binds them together. Anything with seeds, nuts or dried fruits are things they can easily do without, and they get excited enough about fresh grass or a bit of cucumber to not need to bring foods high in sugars or fats into their diet.
Your daughter certainly took a great shot of Oscar there - he's looking expectant perching on his food bowl!

I must dig out a photo of the kind of hanging vegetable skewer I had a long time ago. At one end, there was a hook to attach to the cage roof. The other end screwed off and you could spear all kinds of vegetables. My previous pigs loved it. I wish I could find another one.

I've seen those, Shades, and they are great. It's like a veggie kabob, only without the skewer point at the end I had them when I had the store bought cage, but I have no way to attach it to the roof of the current set up.

Yeah, I guess I'm just thinking of that being a chew toy instead of looking at it as a food item- I just want them to be entertained during the hours I'm gone. When I leave for work, the last thing i do is put something in their cage for amusement. Most of the time it's a small wood block for chewing, or a twig. They also have a straw or wicker ball to play with, until they unravel it. (this takes a while) We've tried offering them other assorted food-type chew items, but none of them have shown much interest except for the vitamin-C chews. I'll try not offering them as frequently, although Theodore doesn't use his too often, so he's not getting extra sugars in his diet too much anyway. I suppose Oscar burns off extra fat the way he runs around, too.

Try toilet paper rolls. Not only do most families have lots of toilet paper tubes, but hanging a couple at different places on the side of the cage allows the pigs to chew at them all day. The serve as something to do and as a chew toy, in one, and there's an endless supply of them. You can stuff the toilet paper rolls with hay, and scatter them around the cage. There are some herb hays that aren't for regular consumption like Timothy hay, but are great as treats inside a TP roll. The whole thing is edible. I've studded tp rolls with pieces of carrot or lettuce, whatever veggie you have. They have to stretch to get it when it's hanging on the side of the cage. They also love the sound the cardboard tubes make when they chew on them

Oscar will pick his up (I cut them into smaller pieces) and swat it out of his own mouth with a paw- I wish I could get it on video. My daughter also cuts them into thin shapes and creates a ball for them to unravel. She hasn't done one for Theodore yet, but Oscar will demolish his in a day or two.

Definitely try hanging them on the side of the cage so they can pull on them and chew them Ooh, that batting it with his paw sounds so cute
