How did you get on love, I assume you took him today, this Saturday? Hugs Jo xx Deo is doing much better! The vet thought he might have an ear infection, which would explain his falling over. He prescribed some Baytril and lots of lettuce (Deo of course looked fighting fit when he was at the vet's; we all thought he was putting on a show so he wouldn't get any more shots/baths!) We gave him his new medicine and he's been moving around and eating. I was away for a good part of the afternoon, so I missed a bit, so I think he needs to eat more hay. However, I am pleased at how he's been acting today and will keep an eye on him tomorrow. The doctor also did some blood work and will give me an update on Monday to see if there are any more problems. (I hope we're in the clear; this last visit cost a whopping $260! Deo's beginning to be one expensive guinea pig- but he's worth it.)

Yay Deo,by the way is that235euros? If that is the case holy f***,that is expensive, but any way hurra for being persistent it paid off Yes, I checked the conversion- that amount is correct. I managed to not flinch when they told me that, because all the previous visits were something around $70 (64Euros) Bloodwork is always expensive, and the Baytril was somewhat customized (They ground up the pills and made it into a easy-to-administer solution for Deo) If this is one of the last visits for awhile, it's okay.

That's not that expensive for my area, for an office visit, blood work and meds. I know it's a hit to the purse, but as you said, he's worth it I'm glad he was acting totally fit at the vets. That makes me think he really does need a padded solid surface to walk on. He may also be a bit of a ham, and happy to play up to the vet

There's a time and place for that kind of language. Maybe it's a generation thing...

Glad Deo seems to be a little better, and the bloodwork is an excellent idea to make sure nothing is being missed - but I know it's expensive and it stings! I know some people go to the doctor and find their ailment suddenly stops bothering them while they're in the surgery, only to reappear afterwards - probably the adrenaline of getting there and having it looked at. Maybe there's an element of that with animals too (although of course they can't overthink things like we do!).
We have censoring software on the forum that replaces certain swear words with different words rather than using stars to blank out some of the letters which still make it clear what word would have been used (my kids would see figuring out the letters that were hidden a challenge!). We're extremely mindful that the forum is browsed by young children, in addition to people who simply don't like swearing. So it's a good point - we want everyone to feel comfortable here and to say so if they're not. (Not that it always works - I mean, have you seen how many times a particular winter festival has been mentioned in the last week?!!!)

Alright I will edit the threads I made about the holiday, since that also is making you unconfortable and the one with the word.
I don't agree dough, out of respect I put stars to the word.Underage kids can go on forums with parental supervision right? That way they wouldn't see anything.
Anyway like I said I don't thing o did anything wrong but, sorry for making you uncomfortable.

Oh no, I'm sorry Irina - I was completely joking about Christmas! It's an annual ritual here on Wheekers that people talk about Christmas early and I complain about it and find ways to retaliate. But it doesn't really annoy me at all, it's just a bit of fun (and always reminds me of a dear old member called Poms who sadly passed away some years ago, but was the barmiest about Christmas that anyone could be - you might have seen we have a Christmas cow smilie up all year round which is a little tribute to her). So please don't stop talking about Christmas (Jo will never forgive me if I've put you off!) as I was just trying to make light of the fact that we all have different views yet can hopefully find the middle ground all happily rub along together. With swearing in general, I'm careful about not saying certain words (or clear and close substitutes) around kids or any adults I think won't like it. What I have to remember to be careful with is saying things like 'For God's sake!' as I have some friends who I know aren't comfortable with that. I know other who think we make too much of a deal about swearing and that words are just words - we give them too much power by making them forbidden. It's an interesting topic really, I'm sure we all have quite different views. I really hope I haven't offended you anyway!

My attempt to write Dick Van Dyke, that kept getting changed to Peter, lol! The sensoring software gets a bit off track sometimes, lol! I really don't have a problem with the stars replacing letters so we know what the word is, even if it's not actually spelled out. I do agree, though, that if even one member is put off by something, it's at least worth considering, and possibly just using a different word. We had one whole page going, a few years back, of words to use in place of words that might offend someone. Some of them were hilarious I tend not to swear in general, but us "freaking," or "frell," instead of the offending words. It really doesn't change anything, as everyone knows what it means, just as they know what the words with star letters mean, so in many ways, it's a moot point.

Sorry, I pressed send before I was ready - carrying on: but apparently I am the only one who can. I can swear at times but never in front of kiddies. Yes Piggles hun, "freaking" is a word used a lot here too.

To be fair, I myself let loose with some profanity a little higher up in this thread, but I censored it- I thought a starred-out word would lend a little levity to the post, as it was regarding Deo's reaction to being offered fresh poop to eat. In any case, I as not offended, either- a few other boards I frequent do not allow children to post, and the members there let loose with their cussing on a regular basis. (A few of them sometimes will just post profanity ONLY, if they're feeling a bit sour.) On another board the rule is, no swearing- yet even the site admin herself will drop an occasional F-bomb, so they're fairly lax in enforcing the rules. Back on topic, the vet called and Deo has a few deficiencies, but the good news is that the medicine he is on will correct most of it. He is still a little anemic, and needs some more Vitamin C, but I can get a supplement in a day or two for him. He's eating more pellets, but ignoring his hay. I still feed him Critical Care and watery vegetables, and he seems to love his medicine; he just needs to walk around more. He's still staying in one spot lately, although I move him around just so he doesn't sit in his own mess too long. He's also picked up a habit of wheeking around 3 am. When I check on him, he's standing and looking around. I get him some water and pet him, and he purrs and goes quiet. He'll wheek again in 20 minutes, but I want to leave him be because I can't be getting up every time- I need sleep! Bottom line is, he's still not 100%, but he's better than he was.

My attempt to write Dick Van Dyke, that kept getting changed to Peter, lol! It was winky actually ha! That was one of my personal favourites, but I've let it go now as it made talking about Mary Poppins very confusing (something we do more than I'd ever anticipated!). Anyway thanks to everyone for being considerate of others - we have such a mix of people on here which is great, and while we might not share views on anything but guinea pigs, I know no one wants to offend anyone, so a tiny bit of self moderation can go a long way to making it a happy place to be. Let's get back to Deo now and if anyone is interested in discussing language use further, let's take it to the chatterbox (Bazookagoof can have a right temper on him when people go off topic on his threads - he's acting cool now but he's probably about to blow...). That's good news that the blood work hasn't shown up anything sinister and it's not surprising Deo has a few deficiencies if he's not been eating well for a while. Hope the supplements get him back on track and that he can see off this infection once and for all.

(Bazookagoof can have a right temper on him when people go off topic on his threads - he's acting cool now but he's probably about to blow...). Well, that just stems from my experience on some other boards. On one board (that I don't visit anymore) if the conversations got off topic, the mods would lock it down and delete the "offending" material. One little story regarding Oscar: He's been getting impatient when he gets his breakfast and starts to gnaw on the cage bars. One morning as I was opening his cage door, I realized he was standing straight up but wasn't moving at all. On closer inspection I realized he'd got his upper teeth hooked on a horizontal bar and was hanging there by his choppers! I quickly lifted him up and got him free. He was all right; was probably just confused as to what exactly had happened. He still gnaws at the bars, but lately he just stays a little lower to the ground.

On one board (that I don't visit anymore) if the conversations got off topic, the mods would lock it down and delete the "offending" material. Nothing like natural conversation! Do you give vitamin c to your piggies even if they are well?(aldought vegetables and fruit is given) I've never supplemented as routine, but some people choose to. Mine get daily veg which provide the vitamin C they need, and remember that all good guinea pig pellets will have vitamin c added (although of course if they haven't been stored correctly, this may have deteriorated). I do know some owners who, despite giving their guinea pigs an excellent diet, have had problems related to vitamin c deficiency. So I can totally understand why some people choose to supplement regularly. Oooh crikey! Cadders sometimes gnaws when he knows it's feeding time and hears chopping. If we can (not always possible if we're heading out) we don't feed him until he stops so he doesn't associate doing it with being fed! Sometimes he won't do it for weeks, then it pops up again at mealtimes - it's an annoying noise so I'm glad he doesn't do it much!
