This is about rabbits, but it's the same with any animal. I have never regretted the time and energy(physical and emotional) I put into dealing with a sick guinea pig, dog, cat, goose or bunny. I've forgotten a lot of other times I shared with my animals, but I haven't forgotten any of those, and I would do it all again. So if you ever wonder if you should put an animal to sleep, perhaps thinking about what's in this article will help you decide. www.rabbit.org/journal/2-8/quality-of-life.html

That's a very good article. I have taken care of quite a few sick cats and now two guinea pigs and the struggle is always knowing when it's best for them to be put to sleep or if they're happy enough to keep living and their life is good. This article gives some very good guidelines as to helping you make the right choice. I have never regretted the time spent taking care of the sick ones - at times my house was like a hospice with cats with cancer. It was messy and a lot of work, but if I was sick I would hope somebody would take care of me, so of course I would do it for my pets. Some people can't or won't deal with that stuff, but to me it's just part of having a pet.

Thank you Piggles hun for a brilliant article and a great guide line too. With my animals I always say that wen they give up eating or wanting to eat, it is probably time. You are right Whimsey love, if you are not prepared to look after animals during illness then you shouldn't contemplate having them.
Hugs Jo xx

I realized that a quarter of the time I had with Deo, he was ill. Even though I still miss him, I'm remembering all the good times instead of concentrating on the bad.
Going through an animal's sickness is rough, and I don't mind as long as it's not too often! (I was worried when Theodore seemed to be sniffling; you don't want to go through all that when you just when through it all just a few weeks ago!)
