Looting in these circumstances are a disgrace beyond words, they have to be the lowest of the low to do that. At least the people like Richard Branson have other homes to go to whereas with the majority it is their only home.

I saw a discussion online about the looting - some people saying it's just people acting in self-preservation and doing what all the fat cats and bankers do all the time - taking from us to benefit themselves, they just do it slyly so we aren't faced with the image of what they're taking from us. They say insurance will cover most of the looting, so it's no worse than corporate crime. I agree that's all despicable too, and we need to stop it being so commonplace, but there's something so personal about entering someone's home or independent business after such a major disaster and taking the only things they have left after such a devastating event. It makes it so much harder for them to rebuild their homes, and totally undermines your faith in humanity. It only takes a few to spoil it for so many.

Well said Bean hunni and I don't think it most cases it is a question of survival. They are people just taking advantage of the misfortune of others.

I agree, Jo, I think it's about taking advantage of others, to promote their own situations. Sadly, I also agree with what Bean was saying, that it's no different from what is regularly done to us legally. A small but loud group of people want dogs prohitited from running free, and possibly pooping in or wrecking their flower beds, so they get a law passed that we all have to pay to have our dogs licensed, given certain shots, and that all the dogs be kept on leashes or in pens/fences. We get fined, if our dogs get out of our yards. Yet the police get shoot and kill dogs in their own fenced in yards and even in their own buildings, for doing nothing but barking at the strangers walking by. Somehow the police can get away with it, and with almost anything, by claiming they feared for their lives. They even get away with what they admitted to doing wrong? Along with all the racial profiling and murders by police that we've had for the past 8+ years, the police get away with animal cruelty and murder. There were some cases in the UK a few years ago, where a canine officer repeatedly left his dog in the hot police car until it died of heat stroke, yet he never lost his job, or even faced any charges of animals cruelty and neglect, and each time he was given another dog I think people who don't have many scrupples to start with, see these things happening all around them every day, and figure why shouldn't they get some of the action. So they loot. They take what doesn't belong to them. They leave the owners without what they need and want, all because everyone is doing it to everyone else, in one way or another. We are totally setting the wrong examples, and they are examples too many people are more than willing to follow

That is dreadful Piggles love, luckily the police do not have that power here. To shot them in their own back yards is disgusting. It is hard here to find places where doggies can run free and they are banned from beaches at certain times of the year. That is deplorable about that canine offer here in the UK, it is the first I have heard of it. We do have good protection for animals here but alas there also so much cruelty taking place.

I've had to stop following some friends on Facebook, because they endlessly posted pictures and articles about animal cruelty. Telling those of us who have been fighting it for years accomplishes nothing, finally overloaded me, so I dropped them. I still sign all the petitions I can to protect animals rights, but I don't think most Americans care about animals. Those of us who do are in the minority. Hunting, fishing, having contests to shoot them most squirrels, and a whole lot of other RIGHTS seem to be a lot more important than anything else, to the majority of voters and lawmakers Some states, California and Massachusetts are leading the way in animals rights, but they are right next to states leading the way in animal abuse and cruelty These are great starts, but way too little to stop all the animal mills, cruelty, abuse and abandonment. Luckily, there are some really good people who try to help abandoned animals, and give them great lives, so there's hope for us, yet! I am really hoping social media scathing, and lawsuits against the police will finally halt the shootings, but I'm not holding my breath. On a happier not, Hurricane Irma has died. I guess Jose' is spinning his wheels in the Carribean, so hopefully, there will be some time for those worst hit to catch their breath. Some of my Florida friends have electricity, again, so are still without. I just hope neither Texas nor Florida get hit again.

That is why I avoid Facebook Piggles hunni except for a couple of things like Insect World because people love to post things which upset others, for some strange perverted reason. I sign all the petitions too and send letters. I think there are a lot of people in the UK who care about animals but I am not sure what the percentage is. I know things make me sick and angry when I read about them and I just want to go out and make the perpetrators suffer, which of course I can't do. Unfortunately, these things take time sometimes Piggles sweetie but there is awful suffering whilst they get there.

What bothers me is that, for all the petitions I sign, nothing ever changes. I know people can't be arrested for not committing the crime yet, but to get arrested, they have to have abused or killed the animals, and how does any of that help the animals. We never have penalties or punishments strong enough to convince others not to do the harm in the first place, so I feel as if I'm on a tread mill of signing petitions that do nothing but keep coming back to need to be signed again Meanwhile, I have to avoid the animal cruelty posts and newspaper articles, as they just break my heart, give me nightmares, and I can't get them out of my mind. The humidity finally dried up. It's hot, 90F, but with only 63% humidity, instead of 83 or 93. We had three brutal nights for the two of us, as neither of us sleeps well when it's really humid. I know I swell, and I think hubby does, too, and that makes us too uncomfortable to get much sleep. Hopefully tonight will be a whole lot better! The latest reports have Hurricane Jose' passing close to us, possibly getting Cape Cod, Boston and the islands. It doesn't look as if he's coming close enough to give us much more than a bit more rain, which we can use, as we're far enough inland to be off even the edge of the hurricane. Have to wait and see. A blink in either direction, and we could be get a lot more, or he could go out to see and miss us completely. I guess the UK is getting tropical storm Aileen, from what my friends have posted. Still enough wind and rain to make it dangerous for pets kept outdoors in runs. These are the storms that let us know exactly where all the leaks and weak spots are! I forgot to mention I saw a mother chipmunk and two babies the other day. They were running along the rock berm in our back yard. I kept seeing movement, and when I finally caught up to them, I realized there were three of them. The mother was bigger and darker brown than the babies, which were miniature chipmunks So cute!

That is true Piggles love. I get regular updates from the Care To Petitions Site and sometimes there is good news but often not. I am being absolutely serious when I say this but I would apply the same punishment for cruelty to an animal as for a child or anything else. The laws need to be so much stronger. I can't put what I would do to anyone hurting an animal because it is what some people consider to be too extreme but what I see as extremely appropriate and just.

Another round of sad news with Hurricane Maria and the earthquake in Mexico.

I'm going to ask a Mexican American friend if she knows of a good charity that will really get the donations to the Mexicans who need it. The Red Cross, US or International, is always on the spot, but only about 7 cents of every dollar donated goes to the action program. The rest goes to running the Red Cross, and to paying the CEO an outrageous annual salary. So I'd rather donate to an organization I know will use the money for the needy. It does seem to be one of those Falls, when the bad news never stops coming. 100% of Puerto Rico is without electricity. I'm sure some places have generators, but they also need a source of fuel to run those generators for a potentially extended period. The Carribean is still cleaning up from the last Hurricane, and now they have more damage in a lot of places The Red Cross never delivered the money they promised to the people in Texas. They claim a computer glitch messed up the program, and it had to be fixed. It's already been on the news that the food the Red Cross was giving out was pathetically tiny, more like a minimal childrens meal than anything an adult would need. I think there is water available, as most of the national guard units that went to Texas brought bottled water with them. The New England Patriots football team played the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, in the place where tens of thousands of New Orleans residents went for shelter during Hurricane Katrina. It failed back in 2005, with the plumbing backing up into the building, the roof being ripped off in places, so the best that could be said is that while the refugees were huddles in the water pouring in through the holes in the roof, the holes were letting out some of the sewer stench that was making people ill. I think Katrina brought the whole idea of all systems failing at once, home to us in a way we really hadn't had before. The Carribean knows it all too well

It's tough when fundraising efforts don't seem to get to where the people donating want them to go. We had some of those issue with the Grenfell fire. You want to help, but also want to be assured that what you give will actually help those people directly and instantly. I hope you can find out where to give to help the Mexicans affected by the earthquake.

That has always been a bone of contention with charities, is it going to the right place? It has stopped me from giving on a few occasions and it shouldn't be that way, we should be sure that the money we give goes directly to those who need it.

Dew points finally dropped from the high 70s to the low 50s. I managed both circuits of the neighborhood on my bike, without my leg muscles feeling as if they were going to quit on me, after just half a circuit. More rain in the forecast, so I'm totally enjoying the dry air for today!
The latest on the hurricanes for us, which is inland New Hampshire, USA, is that Maria is going to meet up with the remnants of Jose' by Monday, making a bigger storm, possibly Category 1, and causing flooding and some wind damage along the east coast. I doubt there will be much damage other than some downed power lines and flooding.
I'm still trying to find some relief organizations other than the Red Cross, that will get donations directly to those who need it, especially in Mexico, and Puerto Rico, where hurricanes could cause even more damage.
Tomorrow is the first day of Fall! My favorite season. After the summer heat and humidity, the air gets dry and crisp. We're getting our Fall decorations together, to put outside once all the storms pass. Some people already have Fall decorations out, and their houses look festive.

My friend is looking into Mexican charities that work, but nothing so far. I don't have much to donate, but every little bit helps. The leaves are slowly changing here, and falling. Yellow leaves seems to be changing first, though I've seen some red ones, too. Not a lot, yet. Pine needles are really falling. Raining pine needles, sometimes. Yesterday, first day of Fall, was gorgeous. Dry, coolish weather. Not too cold, just a touch of warmth. Today is already warm, and getting warmer. Temps likely to reach the mid to high 80s today, and into the 90s tomorrow. A/c is on! At least we've had a few days of open windows and no a/c. Might get a bit of Hurricane Maria midweek, then it cools down again Can't complain I've been cutting back all the outdoor flowers whose season has passed. They're gathering strength in their roots and bulbs through the leaves, so they're happy. We have some beautiful purple flowers growing wild around the neighborhood, so hubby is going to dig up some and plant them in our garden. I love wildflowers, and these are really pretty.

One of my friends on FaceBook announced the death of one of her classmates- I actually knew the guy, and he was a decent sort. He did a lot of announcing for the sports in high school, and was an animated and upbeat kind of guy. The cause of death was from cancer, and he was only 43.
I heard that my martial arts instructor had also died a few months ago. Don't have much information on that, unfortunately.
It just blows my mind that people from my past have passed on, even more so when they're younger than I am. Just seems like a rotten deal.

Sorry to hear about your school friend and your martial arts instructor. I know exactly what you mean about it seeming so shocking when people are young. A few years ago two local women (who I didn't know massively well, but we had a few mutual friends) died from cancer leaving young kids behind, and it really shook me up. It makes no sense to start thinking negatively about your own life and what could happen to you or your loved ones; none of us know what's next. But it definitely stops you taking certain things for granted, and makes you more appreciative of things you have been able to experience.

I am very sorry too Baz hunni, 43 is no age at all. It makes us realise how lucky we are as we get through each day because you never know when it is going to be our turn. I have just read a couple of books by Silvia Browne and if what she says is true, it has brought a lot of comfort to me because I must admit, I am terrified of dying even though I don't like this world very much. You are right Bean sweetie, it teaches us not to take anything for granted in this life.

I'm so sorry, Baz It seems as if first it's all the much older people dying, then suddenly we're the much older people, and we're the ones dying. It's not supposed to happen in between, especially to people with so much living left to do A couple of people one street over are having yard sales this weekend. There's one sign on the main street, pointing to their houses, yet the people are driving all around the neighborhood, looking for more yard sales. It was like rush hour, when we went biking yesterday morning. A bit annoying, but with all of these lookers, I hope the people had some good sales.
