I've got a new computer (my old one carked it) and don't appear to have a program that can resize photos - any tips for a good (free) one?

SmugMug has a photo editing section. It's not free, though, so if you're looking for free, I don't know of any except Photobucket. I totally don't recommend Photobucket. It's gone postal, with the ads and demands to upgrade to a pay version. I have discovered, finally going back to the very first page of my SmugMug account, that I still have the photos as Private, despite everything I've tried to change that. I may just delete those photos, and upload them again, and see if it will ask me the same questions again, so I can make them more public. I didn't want total strangers being able to access my photos, and even use or share them, but the way I have them as private, they won't copy or share at all. As for photo editing software, I know there are programs, such as Photoshop, but I don't know anything about them. That's much more Baz's territory. I'd like to be able to resize, etc., right on my computer, and not use any of these outside sites. Ooh, what did you get for a computer? I haven't bought one in a really long time. Come on, details

Thanks 3piggles and thanks Baz, I'll have a read.
I really don't want to upload my images anywhere, I just want something I can have on my computer.
Gimp has come up a bit when I've been looking and is the top one on that link too, so maybe I'll go with that...
Oh and I have a notebook, 3piggles - it's made by Medion who I'd never heard of before. I can't tell you too much about it as I had my requirements (14", light, a backlit keyboard) and left my husband to dictate how many gig of ram I needed and what sort of processor would be best (and then find an awesome deal on it!).
Anyway it's a tidy little thing, and is nice and fast so I'm happy!

Bean what operating system are you using? Windows 10? I'm sure you can resize the images with Paint or the inbuilt graphic editor. Having said that, it's not sth I do, so I really don't know

Yes, it's windows 10. And you're right - I could have sworn I'd looked at it properly before, but I totally missed the resize option! Thanks Shades.
That's good news as I've downloaded Gimp but when you resize something it appears to automatically save it in a different format specific to that program - you can switch it back to a jpeg, but if you cant set it to automatically do that, it'd get on my wick! (I'm not saying you can't do that, just that I haven't seen it yet, and clearly I'm not super observant when it comes to computers!)

Hubby and I were just talking about that last night, that I really don't want to get involved with another Photobucket type of site, nor do I want my life in pictures out on some unprotected cloud. We also have Windows 10 and Paint, so I'm going to try that, again. There was a reason I didn't use it the first time, but I can't remember what the reason was.
Gimp got 5 stars from the CNET editor, but there were so many pop up ads, I couldn't read the findings to know why. Photoshop got 4.5 stars from the CNET editor. No idea how many user reviews there were, but those are the reviews that matter. What problems did people encounter.
