Hello all, I have a bit of a problem with Prudie and I wondered if anyone could help. It is not life-threatening by any means but I would like to run it past you.
She has a little skirt at the back which looks like a tutu. It gets matted and I or the vet nurse can cut the larger ones out. However where the sort hairs are around the base of her little bottom are continually wet and I am worried about urine scald. The vet says it is nothing to worry about but I do. I think a botty bath would be the answer but firstly I am worried in case she catches a cold and secondly she is such a diva, she would scream the place down and chatter as she does if I remove knots and she becomes aware of it. All the fur on her tutu seems to have wee wee on it but I can only trim the really long ones which she does not feel or she has a panic attack. I am also rather nervous about trimming her really small hairs; quite honestly I don't think it is possible without the risk of hurting her. Thank you darlings for any advice.

Hi there... my little piggy Tizzle has the same problem so i bring her to the vet and they either cut or shave the hair really short back there. It's not something I could do on my own... she too is quite a screamer and I'd be the one having the panic attack! The screaming makes me nervous in general and the fear of hurting her would put me over the edge. It costs me maybe $25 here in Chicago but it's worth it to me - all the stress and anxiety I was having over her getting some kind of infection was worth the $25 to have someone who knows what they are doing take care of it!

Thank you for your reply hunni and we have been taking her to the vet to have it done as we don't trust ourselves not to harm her. It is just that they didn't do a very good job last time and would not shave her short hair saying that she will get cold if we do. The truth is though it needs to be done. I will probably have to go to the vet with Paul next time and ask them to do it properly.

I agree that it'd be best to clip it off. I was going to suggest asking the vets to do it too, if you don't feel confident, but that's a shame if they didn't do a good job the last time. Still, it's worth another try and you can assure them that missing a bit of hair around her back end won't make her cold - and definitely not half as cold as sitting with wet fur will make her!
In the meantime, wiping over the wet hair with a dampened flannel would absorb some of the urine off and clean her up a bit. Give her something tasty when you do it to try to stop her fussing - she sounds dramatic though ha!
If the problem persists with short hair, it might be worth getting them to check for a UTI as a wet bottom can be a sign of that. Hopefully it's just related to the long hair though.

Do they pee a lot in their houses. I had that problem with one of my boys. I rolled up wash clothes and lined all of their houses, around the edge of cage, anywhere the urine could splash back on them. It seemed to help. I also put a lot of absorbent bedding under where they normally peed the most, so they weren't lying in the liquid. I hope that helps a bit.

Thank you ladies, I will ask the vet next time to shave the bottom hairs off which are constantly wet. Their complete pen is cleaned out every day and often extra hay added later on but it could be part of the problem. I think when Paul goes to the vet he isn't assertive enough and the complete clipping needs to be insisted upon. I will get her checked for a UTI too. The next time we have cuddles I will wipe her little bottom with some cloth and hope it helps. I must say though, it isn't bothering her at all, it is bothering me far more!  Hugs JO xx |

I'm sure you will notice very quickly if her skin becomes irritated by it, and that's the main thing to look out for. Glad she isn't bothered by it - it's probably why she's not bothering to move away from where she's just weed ha!

If she had urine scald, she'd be bothered by it. Be glad you caught this before that happened. Just wiping her butt with a wet cloth should help keep urine scald away.

The shaving is definitely going to help. I had a Peruvian (my Scuttles) who had the same problem and did not like getting his hair trimmed back there at all. He never made it easy to do lol. Shaving the area turned out to be the best way to manage the issue.
If you are worried about urine scald, sudocrem is safe to use on guinea pigs. I use it for my lil guys when I need to make sure there is a moisture barrier...it's in the baby Isle of any grocery store...15 bucks for a large jar. It is extremely soothing and anti inflammatory too. Just rub a bit on her lil bum and bits, and it will protect her from getting burns or infection.
