My mother was all about holding onto the past. Obviously it meant something to her, as she was there when the lady happened. I wasn't around in the 20s, 30s and 40s, and was pretty young for most of the 50s, so it's not that important to me, or to my sister. My mother never seemed to understand that.
I have some family heirlooms I really care about, like my paternal grandmother's Singer treadle sewing machine. It's in a cabinet with lots of scroll work and bevelling on the drawers and work surface. It needs to have the paint stripped, and the belt resting. I love it, and will have the work professionally done at some point. My mother didn't want it because it wasn't from her family. Bit of a snob.

I am naughty there Piggles love, I am always thinking about the past, thinking it was better than it is now. It some ways it was, in others, it wasn't. I wish I could go back thinking as I do now. My mother had a sewing machine but I am not sure what happened to it. I have a little glass bowl which I remember from childhood. I remember my mother used to put treats in it for me to eat. I look at it and think, can this really be the same little bowl from all those years ago?

I think our memories take on a life of their own, depending on how life is treating us. I've never been one to live in the past, simply because it wasn't very good. Things are good right now, so I live in the moment now. I wouldn't want to repeat any of my childhood, or many of my adult years. They just weren't worth repeating. I think, if we look at our pasts with open minds, we find there were at least a few good things, but there were also a lot of bad things. The good old days weren't all that good. I find the items I have from my past that mean much to me usually have to do with cooking. That's always been where I was happiest, so whether it's an old pot from my mother, that I remember using in her kitchen when I was a kid, or one from another event where I was usually cooking, and things went really well, I do find a common thread
