Hello! I just got a guinea pig named Cookie Dough. She is about 1 1/2 - 2 years old. I had a piggie about 10-12 years ago so it's like starting all over. I know want to get her a bigger cage and more "toys." Any suggestions on either would be awesome!

Hello and a warm welcome to Wheekers! This page on Cavy Cages is one of my favourites for advice on entertainment. Lots of ideas that are cheap or free. Mine love cardboard tubes stuffed with hay, cardboard boxed turned upside down (with a couple of doorways cut out), piles of hay and towel tents. I do buy the wicker balls and wicker tunnels for them sometimes too, especially if we're going away and I feel like they need more entertainment to compensate for lack of interaction with us! As the page says, a piggy friend is the best thing you can do to keep her happy. Guinea pigs are social animals and companionship and communication are really important for their well being. Even when we spend loads of time with our pets, they're still alone for hours a day, and by giving Cookie Dough (great name by the way!) a pal, you'll know she can still interact and amuse herself without you. Another female or a neutered boar would both make great companions. I love watching them interact too so it makes them more fun for us - whether they're grooming, snuggling, popcorning together or undertaking negotiations over the last piece of cucumber, it's all good fun!

Hello and welcome I second everything Bean said. After almost 20 years of parenting guinea pigs, I've found pet stores sell very little that is eiter good for guinea pigs, or particularly interesting to them. Generally, the items interest the owners, who spend money at the store buying a bunch of bad or useless items for their piggies. Piggies have endless fun destroying a cardboard box, moving it around the cage, chewing it to pieces, and anything else they can think to do with it. It's a good way to keep their teeth worn. A good paper bag with a back door cut in it is also great piggy fun, because it makes a lot of noise, but falls apart much faster. If you check the Housing thread in our Wheekerpedia section, there are pictures of members cages. You might find some great ideas there, and C&C cages are definitely a lot less expensive than store bought cages

As far as toys go, you'll have to collect a few and see what your guinea pig likes. I buy assorted stuff for my guys, but there are a few they seem to ignore and others they love- so you'll likely be experimenting to see what Cookie Dough likes to get into.
