Facebook was flooded with Happy Easter messages. Both news stations we watched covered Easter celebrations. It was also Passover, but only after repeated broadcasts where that wasn't even mentioned, our local station finally bothered to include it in the Happy Easter and Passover message. That's why it was forced religion. Not here, as we didn't even have a special Easter dinner, just food we wanted Tonight we have Chinese take out. The Chinese restaurant we really like is about a two minute drive from the new dentists, so after my appointment, we just had to hop over there and get take out

Ah I'm spared once again by not being a Facebooker! We did have a roast meal on the Sunday, but because that's what we fancied. Because everyone else in the family is taking a turn cooking each week, when I do cook, I enjoy it even more and go to more effort with little extras, so it works out well all round.
Hope you enjoyed your Chinese!

Good Chinese, yes I can imagine it's nice to get breaks while the others cook, especially if the food is good. I like to cook, but don't mind having hubby take over when my back is bad. April is sort of a weird month around here. It's still not hot, at least not very often. It can get below freezing overnight. We get a lot of rain. The whole April showers bring May flowers routine. We get just enough really nice weather for a lot of people to buy annuals flowers, then lose them to the killing frost that comes every year, only to do it again next year, lol It's like going outside in shorts and tank tops in January, when the temps going from below zero to above freezing. Then everyone gets a cold, and wonders why

I looked at the pictures before reading your post, and thought you had a fitness tracker that was telling you that you were slim and fit!
Good going!
We've been continuing with the family games of badminton each week. After a couple of weeks of scoring and playing matches, we ended up dropping it as it just wasn't as fun with all the faffy stuff with switching sides to serve and keeping score. We're all improving though, and if you ignore the time I cracked my daughter on the head with a racquet, it's good fun too!

Good for you Shades love. I dread to think what it would say about me lol! I used to enjoy a game of badminton many years ago.

I looked at the pictures before reading your post, and thought you had a fitness tracker that was telling you that you were slim and fit! Good going! Cheers Bean! That's the first time I've run 5K. I was determined to do it today. And the other photo is the tag from my new trousers. It's been a long long time since I've worn slim fit, believe me 😁 The running helps with weight loss, but not that much. It's definitely hard to lose weight by exercise alone. Since the start of the year I've been reading all kinds of articles and watching hundreds of videos about health and healthy eating. I really wish I'd done that much earlier. They opened my eyes to understand that everything I'd learned before is actually wrong. So a few months ago, I threw away all my old habits...and I feel much better for it.

Wow! Excellent in all areas, Shades I know what you mean about learning the wrong ways. Those ways used to be right. That is really exciting, and you should be really proud of yourself

Have you read much about the microbiome, Shades? I've been reading a bit about that and find it really interesting - there's loads of research going on, but it seems to be tied in to so many aspects of our health - including weight. And the way our diets and lifestyles have changed over recent decades don't do anything good for it.
Are there any old habits you're missing or has your outlook changed enough so you're happy to have left them behind? I'm not trying to lose weight, but over the last couple of years I've been tweaking my diet for general health reasons and am finding my taste buds have changed and much of the processed/ sugary crud I sometimes ate before now tastes pretty grim to me!

I've changed so many of my habits for better ones, but can't kick the chocolate habit. The best I can say is, I generally eat in a very healthy way, so maybe the chocolate won't kill me I'll check out the microbiome.

It's almost May, and it's SNOWING, and it's STICKING! This is UNBELIEVABLE weather today! The weather reports are predicting almost four inches today.
On an unrelated note, I know I have plenty of time before Halloween, but I'm amazed at how difficult it is to procure a set of plain black high boots. Every vendor is out of stock, at least in my size. I suspect the upcoming Marvel movie has something to do with it, along with the series of Star Wars celebrations happening nationwide.
I still have time; I'm just trying to get it all done way in advance so I'm not scrambling at the last second.

A friend in Calgary said she was getting 15cm. Not sure how much that is in inches. I guess you got the same front. We've been getting rain, though was did get some snow mixed in. Didn't amount to anything. I think most people are tired of snow, and just want to get on with the season.
I think you're right about the boots. Cosplay is really popular, and those boots are used in a lot of cult movies. You do have time. You might even be able to order them in advance, if you can find any place that will put you on a list.

I had to help my wife drag in a whole thunderin' herd of potted plants she just bought a few days ago; our living room looks like a jungle! She also bought something she calls a "lettuce plant", which is just a large pot with several heads of lettuce in it. We made sure not to put it near Murphy's cage- he could just nibble it all day!
My backyard is a mess:
Though I must admit, I've never seen so much snow and yet so much green! (Enough leaves on the trees have sprouted to where the snow can't reach the ground!)
I'm not worried yet about the boots- there's still another six months to go. There's a few cheap options, but I don't want to buy something that might fall apart quickly. I usually recycle my Halloween costumes several times, so I want to get some mileage out of everything. On the flip side, there's no need to drop $200 on something I might only wear 10-12 more times in my life!

Snow!
Glad you managed to rescue all the plants.
I think you should take Murphy on a sneaky little trip to visit the lettuce plant, his eyes will pop out of his head! Let him have a little nibble, your wife will never know...!

We bring in about 3 dozen plants every Fall, and they take over the house until Spring. We're trying to set up our raised veggie garden planters as mini greenhouses, so the plants and seedlings, can go outside to stay. Hubby keeps buying the wrong ml of clear plastic, but we'll get there. Your yard looks cool or should I say cold, lol

I'm not trying to lose weight, but over the last couple of years I've been tweaking my diet for general health reasons and am finding my taste buds have changed and much of the processed/ sugary crud I sometimes ate before now tastes pretty grim to me! I've given quite a bit of thought to this post, hence the slow delivery. As I mentioned before, I've had a long and winding journey to get where I am now. Now that I'm here, I'm extremely passionate about what I'm doing and how it's changing my life for the better. But I don't want to come over as a preacher, or even worse, a fanatic So I'm just going to give you the cold facts... I think the first time it all made sense was when I came across the Public Health Collaboration website (https://phcuk.org/). That was my light bulb moment. The PHC report I read highlighted the problems with current (government) healthy eating guidelines and weight loss advice - the same ones I'd grown up with and still followed loosely. It also suggested changes based on the most up to date scientific evidence. Everything I read was just so logical. And that's when I embraced the "low carb high fat healthy eating lifestyle". "Healthy Eating Guidelines & Weight Loss Advice For The United Kingdom" phcuk.org/healthy-eating-guidelines-weight-loss-advice-for-the-uk/I'll admit this is a big change but for too many years I've been following what's now understood to be bad advice - desperate times need drastic measures. Probably the two most important things I've recently learnt is that so many staple foods are high in "hidden" sugar (eg. rice, pasta, flour, root veg) and that insulin plays a big role in managing our health. Insulin was always something for diabetics. I never realised it was something that I should know and think about. Here's a short video explaining the whats and whys of weight control in a nutshell.

When hubby was diagnosed with borderline diabetes, I really delved into all of this, because doctors/nutritionists tend to dumb down diabetic eating to "don't eat white foods, and avoid sugar." They don't bother to explain that white foods tend to be high in carbohydrates, which turn to sugar alcohols that hit the system as hard, and sometimes harder, than straight sugar. People they advise just check the amount of sugar, and decide what they can and can't eat. Not right! They should look at the carbs and the amount of dietary fiber. I've changed our diet radically over the last 10-15 years. First when he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and cholesterol, and then when he got the borderline diabetic diagnosis. I've found we can do pretty well on a Mediterranean diet, if hubby would just stick to it, and not go all meat and potatoes on me regularly! At least we get the value of having high fiber, low carb and low sugar items with the bad stuff

I've found we can do pretty well on a Mediterranean diet, if hubby would just stick to it, and not go all meat and potatoes on me regularly! At least we get the value of having high fiber, low carb and low sugar items with the bad stuff I've never been diagnosed as diabetic but considering all the sugary junk I was eating, I was probably on my my way there. I can understand your frustration with the advice you received from the so-called specialists. But I don't blame the doctors, rather the system they have to work within. For regular doctors, they must follow the medical board guidelines else risk losing their livelihood. Fortunately, things are changing and new ways to treat diabetes are being suggested. (Un)surprisingly, the LCHF eating I'm following has been shown to be successful in helping diabetics come off medications. Dr Jason Fung (in Canada) and Dr David Unwin (in the UK) are two doctors whose advice I trust. You can catch up with them on Youtube. Beware, if you watch one video, you can go down the biggest rabbit hole In my new world, it's OK to eat fatty meat, so tell your husband to fill up his plate. Potatoes are a different kettle of fish. I've become a bit of an "expert" on the glycemic index and load of the foods we tend to eat. My wife wanted to roast some potatoes, so out comes my GI app. Boiled potatoes have a medium GI and GL, but after you bake them they have a GI of 98/100 (almost the same as sugar) and a GL of 26/60. Both figures in the high range. She still cooked them and I still ate some but not too many. That's one thing I like about LCHF - it's low carb, not zero carb. it's not about punishing myself. I'm just being more aware of and managing my insulin levels to ensure I'm in the best of health. A couple of potatoes once a month isn't going to set me back to my old habits. Even so, I'll be happy to never eat rice or noodles ever again. I'm more of a vegetable and fruit fan. I can walk away from processed foods/snacks but that's not to say I wouldn't eat home-made pizza once in a while. +80% chocolate is OK too Eating out or getting home delivery is probably our biggest downfall. All food establishments are definitely adding unhealthy MSG, as well as sugar. A surprising knock-on effect of my new approach to a healthy lifestyle is that I'm spending more time in the kitchen. Every day I make at least one big green salad and I'm more interested in how to cook than I was before. Our kitchen isn't big enough for two, and I hate messy chefs. Someone might get kicked out Footnote:The University of Sydney have a searchable GI database I reference a lot www.glycemicindex.com/foodSearch.php
