For your front side, since you can reach it easily, perhaps ice packs would work. I use the kind that go in coolers, about 1x2'. My chiropractor told me to use as thin a fabric as possible to cover the ice packs, so use a t-shirt or something like that. You might not have to stand in the freezing cold water, if the ice packs work.

I suppose it'd be beneficial to do my whole body, but this is still uncomfortable, so I'll just take small steps for now.

I totally understand that.

Just an update- I've been sticking to the routine, and it's getting slightly easier... but I still wince before I turn the hot water off. I do a count to 30 for my back, and a 25 count for each arm. I do feel much better after it's over, but I do wish I wouldn't have to do this in the first place.
Yesterday the pain at work was unbearable, but today was as fine as things could be, which is tolerable. The only thing I did different today was that I increased my dosage of Advil. Normally I take just one, but the label said if the pain does not decrease, take two but don't take too many in 24 hours. I only need to get past a work shift, so this should be doable.
I don't know if the painkillers were working, or today was just a better day and yesterday was a bad one. I'll just see what happens.

Glad that worst day wasn't repeated, but it's really not good that you're having to regularly take pain relief to do your job. Look after yourself, Baz!

Take a combination of Advil and Tylenol. This is recommended by most doctors, now, and even comes prepackaged. You still don't have to take a lot, but instead of one Advil, at least take one Advil and one Tylenol. If you're only going to take one of each at a time, you can also increase the number of time you take them, i.e. every two or three hours, for the really bad work days. Geeze I wish you could get out of there I know you don't to take too many, or any, if you can avoid it, but that job has shown you you can't avoid it

I'm halfway through the Advil- when I finish that (which shouldn't be long) I'll look for that combo.

I still haven't managed to remember to do the cold water ending to my shower. I think I have a mental block, lol

I tried something different these past few days, but it didn't work to my satisfaction: I attempted to gradually lower the water temperature during my shower so that when it came to soaking in cold, I would be more acclimated to it. However, it seemed like going from very cool water to extremely cold was more of a shock than very warm to very cold! I did this for two days, then tonight went back to my normal routine, and everything was fine- at least, as fine as it could be, given that I'm dousing myself with cold water!

I admire your persistence! It definitely sound like a better plan to do it in a way that doesn't traumatise your body - it's already putting up with a lot!

Maybe the shock effect is part of the cure?

Today I decided to just soak my arms. I don't know if it's the cooler weather, but my body seems less enthused about getting hit with cold water when the temps are only in the 60's. Besides, my back seems to be fine lately.

knowing how easy it was to get out of bed all summer, versus now that it's a colder in the mornings, I know what you mean. I wonder if your body will adjust and start aching again, or if the colder weather alone will help with the pain?

I'll find out as the temps drop, I suppose. Today I went back to the usual full treatment, as I desperately needed it after work. I may even take painkillers tomorrow, as I usually try to avoid that on weekends.

Yesterday my back was aching, so I tried to go under the water much longer than usual. I managed to do a count until 50! I did my arms, and then went back under for another 15 count. What's interesting is that I think my body's acclimating itself to this, very slowly. The cold water almost feels like warm once you get used to it. (Like jumping into a pool, you don't notice it once you get it over with.) It's still not the most pleasant thing, but if it helps I'm going to keep at it for now.

I'm glad you at least have that option, and it helps. Otherwise, that job would be impossible for you I think we do acclimate, so not surprising if you are. Good thing, actually, as the muscles still get the cold, but you don't feel it as badly.

The shower tonight was painfully cold; I think this is because we have the windows open and it's in the 60's. I should close the window in the bathroom and see if trapping the heat in the room will make the cold shower bearable. If this works, then I can keep doing this throughout the season.
