Hi guys! It's me rea again wanted to let everyone know that we're doing very well here. Spud and muffins are doing amazing, and spoiled. But I wanted to share some amazing news! I have been on the fence about adopting a parrot, and recently a sanctuary got in contact with me and asked if I was willing to adopt a special needs African grey. He was very abused, and was used for breeding before he was rescued. The poor guy has a limp and a non useful foot.
They have been working with him and rehabilitating him. It's scary, exciting and wonderful that we can offer this dude a real home.hes 11 years old. We are driving two hours each way to visit him this Saturday to start the process of adoption. I will post pictures of everyone Soon wish us luck

Oooh how exciting, and what a difference you can help make to this chap's life. It's so sad he's been mistreated, and I hope a good home and lots of love will allow him to really relax and be himself.
Looking forward to hearing more about him and seeing him - and it's good to see you too!

People who are cruel to animals should be shot, but that is probably too quick!! The little chap will soon know what it is to be really loved.

Ohh we are very excited. It's just a long process when it comes to adopting these guys, which is understandable. The owner of the sanctuary tells me despite all of the odds he faced before getting there, he is such a sweet handsome guy.
Because of his foot, we are renaming him scooter, to give him a better new start. Thank you so much guys, I will keep everyone posted!
We go out there Saturday, so as time gets closer were all becoming obnoxious lol and eager

Waiting is the hardest part once it's all been decided - you can't be expected to do it gracefully!

Yes, he is a lot heavier and much bigger than I expected lol. My arm was actually getting tired from holding him for too long, but I didn't want to put him down because I knew our time there was limited. The visit was great, with a few concerns that I have. I am a little insecure about the adoption process and how the sanctuary owner viewed us/ me as his potential new flock member. But I was reassured when she brought out the adoption papers for me to sign and fill out, which I did there without hesitation. He is not socialized at all, so when I was able to get him on me, we sat together for a while and he flapped his wings ( which are strong) and I praised him for not flying away and this actually became an accidental trick. After doing this the first time I praised him and he analyzed me the way Greys do, with his head to the side and up, then tested his theory and flapped again and I praised him. He waggled his tail feathers with content, then analyzed the situation and flapped his wings once more, longer this time, and raised himself up to me with expectations of being praised lol. And Bazzo darling, they are one of the smartest and most intelligent parrots in the world with a mental capacity of a seven-year-old child.I go back up there on Wednesday to spend more time with him, I just wish he was closer to me and that I didn't have to work for the next few days because it seems like such a long time from now, and it's just my own fear asking and wondering if he forgot me already or if he will between the time spans of spending time with him. I was gone all day yesterday, so when I woke up this morning Spud and muffins were super excited to see me and the kids lol. I had my coffee with them and reassured that they were spoiled and loved, and gave them a couple of "cookies". My husband even stated that all of our animals are extremely spoiled. Even the fish. I do have videos and more pictures if any of you are interested at www.facebook.com/people/Amy-Grimm/100009301951517

It's great the rescue are taking finding him a great new home so seriously, and it looks like you're passing with flying colours! I hope your arm's not aching too much today! I can see why you're smitten with him.
What's the ideal diet for African greys?

Hi bean, so the ideal diet is some fruits (not too much and shouldn't be a primary source) parrot pellets that are fortified, and use the parrot seed mix as nothing more than a treat mix to give occasionally. They can have one egg a week, plenty of vegetables (no avocado) and no junk food such as pizza and chips, even normal peanuts shouldn't be given to them too much because of the possibility of upper respiratory issues.
I'm taking snap peas, fresh mango and chilli peppers with me when I go back in a couple of days. Haha yes, I love the grumpy old man already.

I think he'll remember you. You made a very positive impression on him, and he knew you were a friend after a little while, or he wouldn't have spent an hour with you Sounds as if just about any animal has a pellet that's the right food for them now. Glad they can have fresh things to spice up their diets. Chili peppers! Definitely spicy

This reminded me of an old joke where a guy has a dog and his friend comments on how well the dog is trained... whereupon the dog owner replies, "No, he's got ME well trained- all he has to do is sit up and beg, and then I have to run like an idiot to go get him a treat every time!"

so good news everyone, I see Pete ( Rio once he gets adopted to me)tomorrow. I talked to the sanctuary owner earlier and she stated that everything looks really good for us and that his mood has been improving after our last visit. The owner really likes me and my daughters and had already seen our place through video so that way I can put her at ease to know we are doing everything here to get ready for his arrival and she is more than thrilled to see this guy come home with us. I only have to visit him a couple more times at most to be able to bring him home, and she stated that the outcome looks very positive for Pete. She's ecstatic that someone is finally giving this guy a chance to shine in a loving environment.
The husband was a little uncertain about why I wanted Pete so badly, because of all the things stacked up against him such as his disability, not being socialized, and I stated that that is why. Because nobody else gave this guy a real chance to be happy and feel what a real home and love is. He has been in the sanctuary for almost four years with about four adoptions falling through, so you can imagine how that could affect Pete. I see something in him despite his leg and bent beak, his unsocial ways. Right now I see a depressed African Grey who hasn't had the chance to live a very fulfilling life like other birds has been able to get through the sanctuary. Most birds there are adopted within six months of arriving, and there's my baby, sitting in a room, in a cage, waiting for that chance. Its animals in these situations that tend to become the best companions, because they understand where they came from, and the appreciation for what people like us can give them.

I'm pleased it's all going so well, and great that his mood has been lifting after your visits. It sounds like socialising him will be a long term project, but it's definitely off to a great start.
It's certainly rewarding to have the chance to turn an animal's life around when they've experienced suffering or neglect. I look forward to seeing Rio Pete thrive in a loving and caring environment.

He's gorgeous, so glad he has a loving home now. Just the feeling of giving neglected animals a good home and watching them thrive under your care is so rewarding.

I really feel for him, and am so glad he'll finally have a loving forever home. The poor boy has had his hopes raised before. This time he really gets to go to his new forever home
