Yes, it's big news over here that Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts. Given how much clear evidence there was of him using completely unnecessary force, I can't imagine what the consequences would have been if he'd been cleared...
Let's hope this is the start of more transparency and accountability in policing. It'll take time, but I hope trust can be built back up.

White people used to lynch black people for all sorts of trumped up reasons. He looked at my daughter, sort of thing. When lynching was banned, and then stricken from all federal, state and local laws, white cops started killing unarmed black men, and claiming they feared for their lives. That claim always got them acquitted by the jurors. No more. It's time to put an end to the systemic murdering of black people by white people, and hopefully this is a good first step. There are three more trials coming up. If all of those cops are found guilty of murder, again hopefully, the cops will finally get the point.

Someone at work wanted my opinion on the trial- I was happy that cop was found guilty. I don't care if the person who got killed "was a bad citizen", that is completely irrelevant to the situation. He deserves a trial by a jury of his peers; cops do not get to decide who's guilty.

That's been the issue, cops acting as judge, jury and executioner. As you said, not their job.
The 16 year old girl shot in Ohio is a different situation. She was actively trying to chase down and stab another girl. The cop wasn't close enough to risk physically stopping the girl, and had to do something.
Question is, did he have to use his gun, or could he have tased her? Could he have caught up with her and used his night stick? Again, the gun should be the last option, not the first, and two many cops use it as the first option. It will be interesting to see how that trial goes. The boy shot a couple of towns away from Minneapolis is hard to justify, though.
Lethal force to combat lethal force, only. What happened to that?

Tomorrow I get my first vaccine shot! I'll post my experience here; I don't think much will happen with the first jab; the consensus seems to be the side-effects kick in with the second dose. We'll see what happens.

An article I read said the Pfizer one has the fewest side effects, though of course, someone with an existing condition, or taking certain meds, will have some negative reactions. The J&J vaccine may not even get used, unless some states start forcing people to get vaccinated, or not be allowed to work, go to school, etc. Republican states will never force the issue that way, and they're the states with low percentages of people vaccinated Glad you're getting your first shot, and hope you don't have any adverse reactions

Had the first shot- no side effects, and it's been nine hours. I felt sore and tired, but that's normal on a Saturday after five days of hard labor. I did have to pick up some used books from my parents' house, and lifting those books was an agonizing experience. I weighed them at home- a little over 20 lbs. They are big, heavy books, and I should have taken painkillers today had I known. Everyone was out of the house this weekend, and I spent the rest of the day relaxing and organizing some odds and ends, nothing too physically taxing. I still have all day tomorrow, too. I do enjoy these kinds of days; sometimes it's good just to have the place to myself. (and the guys, too.)

Glad you've got the first one ticked off the list. Hope the rest of your weekend is uneventful and relaxing, and that your arm recovers for Monday!
Did you have to schedule your second dose along with the first, or do you do that closer to the time? It varies here - the big vaccination centres are scheduling both, but smaller places (like doctor's surgeries) don't have the same supply guarantees, so they organise the second closer to the time when they know when they're getting their deliveries.

My second dose is already scheduled for May 15th, so as long as work doesn't kill me, I'll be getting my next shot in 3 weeks!

Excellent, both the shot and the relaxing time! Our second shot was automatically booked when we got the first shot. We had to wait a month, but that was last month. A three week wait is better, I think. Get it done and over with!
We had one of those relaxing days, today, too. It felt good, so I hope you enjoyed your Sunday as much as your Saturday <3

I know the ideal gap before the second dose varies for different vaccines, but here they're trying to give as many people as possible the first dose first, so if you're healthy, the gap before your second dose can be up to 12 weeks. I've put it in my diary but they send text reminders which will be useful with that long to forget the date!
They're doing more research about the effects of mixing and matching vaccines, and they seem to be quite promising. I'm sure we'll all need boosters this winter anyway, so there might be more evidence in by then about what's most effective, especially with all the emerging strains.

We got our shots 4 weeks apart, and were told not to get any other vaccines for at least 4 weeks after the last shot. That's for Pfizer. I don't know if the 4 weeks between the first and second shots was mandatory, selected as a reasonable amount of time to process people through for the first shot, what. Since Baz only has to wait 3 weeks, it makes me think it was more of an arbitrary time for processing people. I have finished my month waiting period, so need to get my pneumonia and shingles shots. I was up there, today, but my back was bothering, and I just wasn't in the mood. It would probably be better to get the shots on a Wednesday, just to have a day between the shot and swimming. I think you're right that we'll need boosters, and over time, may need an annual shot like the flu shot. Given more time, the vaccine manufacturers will have time to sort out a lot of issues, figure out if more specific vaccines are needed, etc. Like the flu, I think COVID-19 is here to stay

Well, we got a new refrigerator back in February and already it's got issues. The freezer isn't working, and I'm sure our food in there is spoiling slowly. We'll have to schedule a tech to come out; this is under warranty and is beyond my expertise anyway. As far as I can determine, it's either the evaporator fan or the condenser fan. I don't know if they're the same thing, but I know a fan inside isn't running, and everything is going soft, fast!

Oh that's frustrating with it being so new, hope they can come out and check it out pretty quickly. Eat all that ice cream really quickly, just to make sure you don't get ill!

I hope you get it fixes quickly, before you lose a lot of food. If nothing else, get a block of ice, put it in a pan, and put it in the freezer, if it will fit, of course. If not, a few bags of ice should do the job. Having lived where we lost power on a regular basis, we learned how to save as much food as possible.
That reminds me, an appliance repair person has been to the house next door a few times, and since, as some point, we all need an appliance repair person, I want to make a note of the one my neighbor uses.

Inexplicably, the darned thing seems to be working again! The ice cream is hardened and the ice is solid. My wife contacted a friend who had extra freezer space and we got our stuff over there last night, but customer service told us to observe it for a few days. We'll see what happens. As long as our food is safe elsewhere, this will be okay until next week.

Oh not intermittent faults, they're the worst. And I'd guess that while you of course need to save your food, the freezer having to work less hard to keep a certain temperature may mean certain faults are less likely to occur. Have you got a thermometer that can tell you what the temperatures are in there?

Intermittent faults are the hardest to diagnose, and that usually means multiple trips by the appliance repair person I hope whatever was wrong has sorted itself, and it doesn't have the problem again! Last day of April. Seems as if the month went really quickly. Cinco de Mayo is really big over here. It was started here in the US, and has become a reason for stores of all kinds to have sales on items and foods for Cinco de Mayo parties. The nice thing is not all of the foods are purely Cinco de Mayo, so we get lots of things like Bell peppers on sale

Have you got a thermometer that can tell you what the temperatures are in there? I have one of those hand-held thermometer guns if I need it, but I use the tub of ice cream as an indicator if it's working properly. So far it's still functioning, but we haven't brought our food back from my wife's friend's house yet. We're waiting to see if the issue crops up again.

Wise choice. If the ice cream starts to melt, you'll have to eat it All digits crossed for whatever was wrong to have sorted itself!
