Looking at the candles on the cake, it's not a sight I've seen at many birthdays over the last year and a half - covid has made it quite unacceptable to intentionally blow over something everyone's about to eat! (And to be fair, after attending many kids' birthday parties over the years, the ceremonial spitting on the cake that young kids often do as they try to blow, has long been unappealing to me!) If we've had candles, we either stick them in a separate cupcake for that person, or sometimes a potato/ carrot! My money's on you being happy to pass on candles anyway, 3piggles!

Thank you Baz I haven't had a birthday cake in years. Vic won't eat it, so I have to eat the whole thing, and don't want to do that. I made myself a graham cracker with Nutella and jam on it, and that was my cake No candles I know what you mean about the ceremonial spitting on the cake, and lots of adults do it, too. Even before COVID, I wasn't that keen on eating a piece of those cakes, and since COVID, I'm really not! We had steak on the Barbie, a caprese salad, and a mix of hot veggies. It was quick, easy and tasty. Little clean up, when the steak is cooked on the grill. Hubby did want to order Chinese to celebrate, but since I've cut way back on the salt, I haven't had any thigh cramps, and those are horrendously painful. Risking that just to have Chinese food didn't appeal to me. I've started making my own stir fries with diluted sauce, so it's still tasty, I can enjoy it, and I don't get clobbered later at night Peanut called to wish me a happy birthday last night Daughter got on the phone, too. One of her cats is missing, so I hope the cat's okay. Vic's sister didn't call, which is fine. We were both so tired, we just wanted to veg in front of the TV, and go to bed.

Ah that's nice that you got to speak to Peanut and your daughter, and that you didn't get caught up with Vic's sister either! The birthday cracker sounds great too - I remember once being away for my birthday when I was a kid, and my aunt made me birthday toast - a bit of toast with some glace icing and sprinkles on - I loved it!
Speaking of sprinkles, there's a ruckus going on at one of our local bakeries that's being dubbed 'Sprinklegate'. A popular bakery got reported to trading standards for using US sprinkles in their bakes, sprinkles which contain food additives that have long been banned over here (because of links to hyperactive behaviour in kids). The bakery were scathing about whoever reported them, making out like it was some sad individual with too much time on their hands, and saying that UK sprinkles are inferior and they'd rather use none if they can't use the American ones. Their view was that everyone will suffer for this ridiculous imposition of red tape.
It all seemed quite farcical, but then of course many people were gobsmacked that they've knowingly been using a product which is banned over here, and that their products have probably had an adverse effect on the behaviour of many kids over the time they've been open (it's a fairly new business). The owner is too busy effing and jeffing on social media about having his sprinkles taken away, and hasn't acknowledged this potential issue at all!

We grew up on PB&J sandwiches. Then lab rats who ate 20lbs of peanut butter a day developed cancer, and there was a huge hullabaloo about peanut butter being cancer causing. Jump ahead a few decades, and the health benefits of peanut butter are being touted. I really doubt there is as bad a problem with the US sprinkles as the UK and EU make out. Yes, there will be children who have an adverse reaction to them, as there will be children who have adverse reactions to a lot of founds, even organic, locally grown and totally approved. It's about the physiology of the child more than the product. If a child with extensive allergies and adverse reactions to just about everything, has an adverse reaction to US sprinkles, chances are good the child would have had an adverse reaction to 90% of his or her diet, and there's no reason to ban sprinkles. I really think some of these bans are knee-jerk reactions, and not sensible ones. Back to the FODMAP elimination diet. Eliminate everything that could be causing an adverse reaction. Slowing add back each item, one at a time, to see if there is an adverse reaction. Try more than one at a time, and see if there is an adverse reaction. Come on, people, think! Still, Sprinklegate is too cute, lol Your birthday toast sounds great Vic used to get me a cupcake at the really great cupcake place in Manchester, but he didn't this year. A cupcake is more than enough sweets for me to celebrate my birthday

I don't know how compelling the evidence is behind certain E numbers being banned, or how many kids have been affected. Historically I've only heard of it in terms of ADHD/ADD, and have known a few parents over the years who have said that certain E numbers do really have a massive effect on their children's behaviour. But as those additives are usually used in foods with loads of sugar, I suppose there may be some grey areas there... But I'm all for eating food rather than chemicals, even if there are loads of contradictions with banning those and other potentially harmful things we're allowed to do!

It does seem as if governments ban what they feel like banning, or what the public wants banned, but not everything dangerous to us, across the board. Makes me wonder if the bans really accomplish anything. If there's no proof the additives alone cause problems, the whole issue should be reviewed. I never stopped eating peanut butter. I figured since I was 1K times larger than a lab rat, and never ate more than a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter, I wasn't going to get cancer from it, and I didn't
