Happy July, everyone! It's getting off to an interesting start, at least- I'm home today from work and will be off until the 7th- I had an infection in my right arm that started to swell, and last night I went to a clinic to have it taken care of. They said I should do no heavy work for 5-6 days, so I'll be resting, more or less. I say more or less, because I plan to get a few things done that shouldn't tax me too much. I'm probably alright to go to work- I don't feel any worse than usual, but I tend to follow a doctor's orders, despite my somewhat ridiculous work ethic.

I'm glad you're taking the time off. That's not something you want to push, or it probably won't heal right, and will drag on. It also gives your body a bit of healing time, since you don't get any vacation time for a year. Do you have any 4th plans, or is everyone heading off in different directions? Either way, enjoy your off time

Either way, enjoy your off time Thank you- my supervisor didn't seem to have any issues, and neither did the staffing agency. I'm slightly bummed that I had to take the time off, but then again, I needed it. My daughter's going to a friend's summer cabin, and I'm visiting my parents on Sunday. I believe my wife is having friends over on Monday, and I'll be around for that- this particular couple I'm on good terms with.

Sorry about the infection in your arm, Baz, but glad you're getting a few days off. Hope your arm soon heals up and you can enjoy the break from labouring. Hopefully you'll have some time to practise on your software too - mouse clicking doesn't count as heavy work, does it?!
Hope you all enjoy the holiday weekend.

I hope Vicki has a good time at the cabin, and you have fun at your parents house. Good to have a couple you and your wife both like, so enjoy that, too

Hope you both had a good time celebrating with family and friends.
I saw the news about what happened in Chicago yesterday, so was thinking of you especially, Baz.

It happened over in one of the northern suburban sections, well away from my neck of the woods- but still an unnerving experience. Of course, the shooter was a tRump supporter- rational people tend to not fire guns at unarmed crowds. But the remainder of the day wasn't bad- my wife's friends dropped by for a few hours. For a while, my wife was under the impression that only the wife was showing up, so I made plans to relax and get some minor chores of my own done, but at the last minute we found out the husband was showing up anyway, so I scrapped my plans for the day. Not that big of a deal, but I prefer a little "spiritual preparation" for something. If I know I have to play host, I can mentally get myself ready- but if that gets dropped in my lap unexpectedly, I'm a little grumpy about it. My wife was a bit put out herself, as the husband prefers American food. If my wife had known for sure, she would have cooked steaks instead. If I make it sound like we had a bad time, it was not so- it was just that a bit more communication would have been nice on their part.

They may not have known for sure until the last minute, not to make excuses for them. I totally understand not bringing a vegan to a burger BBQ, unannounced. It's just common sense and common courtesy. Did the husband do okay with the food? I'd love to be invited to Chinese household for dinner. Love Chinese food, and know there's so much more I've never even seen on a menu! The latest mass shooting, in the Chicago area, is all over the news. There was also a shooting in Denmark. Our gun violence is becoming a pandemic of its own The BBQ at our daughters was very good. Vic did all the grilling, stood for two long, and got swollen ankles. Had to take a diuretic when he got home. Otherwise all was good We took our goggles, flippers, snorkels, etc., down for the kids to use in the pool, and apparently they went over really well. I kept my good goggles and cap here.

The shooter in Copenhagen had some mental illness and was "peripherally" known to the police. I believe that there will be an inquiry about why he was allowed to be free, what meds was he on, did he took them, did he have a guardian and most importantly how did he get the weapons. In itself, the guns were legal, but they weren't on his name (which would not be possible either way, with his mental diagnosis). I cannot really follow the news because they are in Danish and i don't speak the language yet. The city is still in shock and in mourning. The last mass shooting in Denmark was in 2015 and it was terrorism-related.
My husband and I and all the people we know in the city, were not in the area at that moment.

Glad you and everyone you know were safe, Amber and Baz. It's certainly been a bad week.
I know what you mean, Baz, if I'm entertaining, I like to know so I can get in the zone. If I think I have a nice quiet time ahead, and then suddenly have to be sociable, it never comes so easily to me.
Glad the swimming gear went down well, 3piggles!

Really glad to hear from you, Amber. You were my first thought when I heard about the shooting. Most of the shootings in the US are by people of questionable mental clarity. That's one reason gun restrictions have been fought so hard, and they're being fought by mental health advocates who want the government to finally pay enough attention to the mental health crisis in the US to make a difference. We don't have enough mental health clinics, beds, people who will work in them if we had them, etc. It's still that invisible illness no one wants to discuss or admit exists, and that has to stop. We do have gun ownership laws, but we have some major loopholes. There's a national 5-day waiting period to buy a gun. Buy it on Monday and pick it up on Saturday. That 5 days is supposed to give the state police time to do a background check on the buyer, but it doesn't. The state police don't have time to do the background checks, so after 5 days, the buyer gets the gun regardless of what would have been found in a background check. We also have gun shows where people can buy guns and ammo, and take them home with them right then. The buyer has to provide a license to carry a weapon, if one is required in the state where the gun show is taking place. The gun shows move constantly, which is why the loophole was allowed for them. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter got he weapons from gun shows, and he went into that elementary school armed for war The loopholes need to be eliminated, but if the 5-day waiting period doesn't result in a background check anyway, what difference does it make? I'm just really glad you're okay, Amber! Could the Tour de France have pushed him over the edge?

My wife and daughter are out of town, so I'm expecting another round of sheer disappointment when my wife returns my camera.
The thing is, I even showed her side-by-side comparisons of pictures she shot with the tablet/her phone and my camera- anything shot with the autofocus built in is very clear and detailed, while shots taken with my camera are fuzzy and questionable at best. She still insisted on taking my camera. I took my daughter aside and told her to take as many pictures with her phone as possible.
Giving someone a professional piece of equipment does not make them a professional.

No, it does not. I hope Vicki carries your camera and uses it, to "free up her mom to use her tablet" Where are they off to this time?

No, it does not. I hope Vicki carries your camera and uses it, to "free up her mom to use her tablet" Where are they off to this time? Off to New Jersey, where my wife has some family. Unfortunately, they left the tablet behind, but my daughter can use her phone. My daughter has taken photography in high school, but regrettably it was not old-school- all the students used their phones to take pictures and not SLR cameras like I did so many decades ago. I'm hoping my daughter has picked up knowledge on how to frame a shot, but so far I haven't seen much evidence of that.

Fingers crossed for the pictures you get back! Are you not going because you can't get time off work, or are you just leaving them to it?

Fingers crossed for the pictures you get back! Are you not going because you can't get time off work, or are you just leaving them to it? I can't get time off, but also- I don't want to make my first vacation since 2019 to be New Jersey. I'm sure it's a wonderful place with great scenery, but I can't stomach the thought of that state being my return to form. Additionally, I would prefer not having to spend time meeting with her family members when we're supposed to be on vacation. Seems like work to me.

We were stuck in summer traffic on the New Jersey turnpike. I looked at the car stuck in the lane next to us, and it was a friend from school. We talked across the gap for about 40 minutes, before we all started moving again. Not much to see on the turnpike. It runs through all the refineries, so huge storage tanks as far as we could see. Get into the farming areas, and it's much nicer. I totally don't blame you for not wanting your first vacation in years to be visiting relatives in New Jersey. You want to go someplace with lots to see and do, and to photograph. Not NJ. I hope Vicki realizes what you'd like her to photograph, and gets you some pictures you can use I thought of you last night. We have streaming TV that goes to Aquatic Life if we don't pick a network. We watched the fish and scenery on Aquatic Life for about 15 minutes, noting all the changes in scenery as the picture panned from one side to the other, and back. I felt like Stilgar, lol I can imagine watching an aquarium for a long time

That's a great coincidence with the traffic!
Sounds like you have a good handle on what your holiday time should be used for, Baz!

Last Friday i had a very nice Home warming dinner at my place. I had a few of my colleagues over for a raclette (similar concept to a fondue, but it also includes a grill). We have a 8-people raclette grill that we brought from Austria and in total we were 7. They got to know my husband and the guinea pigs. The food was very nice (we had marinated beef and chicken, cheese and veggies) and the company even nicer.
Yesterday, while going into the city to listen to a short jazz concert, I overheard a Romanian guy talking on the phone about stealing watches, "doing rounds and cashing in money" and about climbing up the ranks. I was on a train, wearing a traditional Romanian blouse (worst day to choose to wear it), trying to behave as if i can't understand him. All the time trying to remember what he is saying and also trying to add the things together. I noted down when and where he got off and today i filled an online form with the police about the incident.

The raclette sounds great! I've seen chefs make them on TV, and always thought it would be a fun dish to make. Glad your colleagues got to meet everyone, and you all got to enjoy some time together outside of work You did the right thing. The police may do nothing, but hopefully they will. They probably have 100s of pictures of people who commit crimes on a regular basis, and may ask you to look at some. He might be one of the pictures. You never know!
