Is there a way to tell how old my guinea pig is? She looks a lot smaller then the other ones, even with her massive amounts of fur, and I know she is at least 3 months, because thats when we got her from the pet store. I tried looking up ways to find the age, but I couldn't find anything.

Trying to know how to age a cavy is like trying to find out the sex on a goldfish in the petstore. You just can't 'find' out their age.

Generally, you can go by their weight. over 6 months of age, 32 ounces up to 6 months of age, 22 ounces up to 4 months of age, 12 ounces
A 3 month old is usually (450g-600g) 1 pound A 6 month old is usually (900g-950g) 2 pounds And a year old or older (1350g-1850g) 3-5 pounds
Hopes this helps....weight varies in different sexes. ' When weighed my 3 month old male weighed right at 15ounces or almost 1 pound. My older male weighed right at 2 pounds at 30 ounces. Now he is much heavier. I think he needs to go on a diet!

Weight still cannot tell the real age- I had a sow that was a 1 and a half or so, and she weighed 3 pounds. Weight is used to know if your cavy is in the Junior, Intermedite(sp?) or Senior- but you only have them as pets, so weight will not tell you much about their age.

I have a four year old boar that weighs only about 900g. Weight really isn't too good an indicator of age.

Also, some breeds are lighter (in weight) than others. My shelties seem to be a bit smaller.

I was giving a general idea. I really dont know how to tell age from weight, but most websites I gather this from have about the same weight tables. How would you be able to tell? How would a vet be able to tell?

My little himi boy is around 2.3 pounds, and he is almost 2- will be 2 in Nov. 22!! (Just a note: He's such a total sweet pie and has such terrific manners!)
You can't tell the age if you don't know what their birthdate or birth month was. My Casper is now a big, big boy, last time I weighed him, he was 2.11 pounds, and he was born around Sept. 2004. He's older than Storm, and weighs more.

I have a feeling my Jasmine is older than her previous owners said. She is supposed to be the same age as my Clover, 4 years 6 months, but she acts a lot older.
Its more difficult for young piggies. Sweetpea my abby looked like a baby for ages, plus abbies are generally smaller anyway.

My Toffee (abbey mix) is a lot smaller than my pig Coffee (slate with white blobs, smooth) but lots of people say that abbeys are the same size but look BIGGER because of their hair, I dont get this, they are definately smaller.

I think that too Josie, even without the fluffy bits, their build is smaller.

My Abby Butters is small looking and Lil Budah....who I think is a sheltie or some kind of long hair mix looks big, but when wet he looks like a (pardon my phrase) drowned rat.
