Do Cavies need to have a salt wheel?

No. I have seen some where they have, but I have never used one. A good cavy pellet food will have the small amount of salt they need (a balanced feed provides the vitamins, minerals and sodium their bodies require.) I don't think salt wheels do any harm, but I certainly don't think they're a necessity and haven't used them myself.

I am going to take the one that is in the cage out because they have yet to use it.

When I first got Rocky and Lucky, I did give them a salt lick. I bought the economy pack with 10 salt licks because I wanted to be a good piggy mommy. I threw away the economy pack of salt licks because they didn't care for them.
