I would use Carefresh, it is made from paper and contains no chemicals, no dyes, no dust and no aromatic oils which all can be harmful to a cavy's health. When i first got my guinea pig SALLY, I used aspen bedding. Since that had lots of dust in it it made her sneeze, the vet said to switch to carefresh and ever since she sneezes less andI think it may be more comfy for them to sleep and walk on. If you need and more advice just ask any of us. Welcome to wheekers!!!!!

I've never used that brand of kiln-dried pine shavings, but my piggies have always had kiln-dried pine shavings, with a layer of hay on top and they have been fine for years. Everyone has different opinions though, just mentioning my own experience of using the kiln-dried shavings.

I use Snowflake Small animal Shavings. I don't know what the big deal is with Carefresh.

Most people aren't rich & can't afford to buy careFRESH, since that stuff is sooo expensive, I'd be poor it if I used it! It still is dusty, and I never found it that great. Pine can work, I've used pine for so many years, and my cavies are just fine. I ususally use American's Choice, which is Kiln Dried Pine. When it's compressed it's 4.0 cubic feet(113 LITERS). When Expanded, it's 12.0 cubic feet(340 LITERS)- The biggest bag of careFRESH is 50 liters only, so the bag of Kiln Dried Pine I get for like $6.89(That's only for American Money) is a WAY BETTER PRICE, and you gets tons more! The website is: www.awf.comAnd I hardly hear my cavies ever sneeze. CareFRESH is pretty much around $15 so... if you had to get 9 bags(since I'd need that many...ugg) that'd be: $135 A WEEK! If I had to spend that much for bedding just alone, my parents surely wouldn't want all these pigs, as that is a very high price for bedding. But since you have one, the price if you use 50 liter of careFRESH for a month, would be: $60 for just bedding! The American's Choice, ususally last me a few months, and I clean my cages weekly! I found before getting a bedding, know the prices of it, and figure out the weekly & monthly costs. I've use all kinds of beddings before, and CareFRESH is the most expensive one. After experimenting with all sorts of beddings, pine was the best; I've never had any breathing/sneezing problems from it, and it's soft, & comforable, and they are very healthy pigs. I think it's too over-played that pine is really bad too, since I've use it for some many years, without any problems. My vet recommends Oxbow Hay Pellets & careFRESH, but I don't care to use careFRESH or Oxbow Hay Pellets, since in the long-run- they are too much money. You should try different beddings & see which you like the best, and your sow likes the best. You could air out the Kaytee Pine for a few days, and that would lessen the strong pine oil scent. Just try it out if you want, get a little package of it, that's what I did when I wanted to see what the aspen was like, and how well is absorb. But I'm retiring from bedding experiementing... since I've done that for years. Plus pine has a nice scent that covers the smell of urine. You can put hay over it if you don't want it too strong. Just look at any kinds of beddings your getting, in the long-run, since that will save you tons of $$. I'd have to spend a few thousand a year just to have careFRESH for my 5 cavies! For a year, you'd probably have to spend a few hundred for careFRESH, and that does not include the hay & pellets, & veggies.

my guineas have allergies and carefresh worked the best

50 liter carefresh where i live is less than $10 and if i go to a warhouse it is cheaper than that so i used it because cedar was $7.
50liters lasts me 1/2 month (including hamsters and gerbils) so $20 a month X 12 months = $240
this is for me though and casper it probably is more expensive for other people.

But 50 liters still is very little. Why is the careFRESH stuff so darn expensive?! I mean all it is is newspapers that are made into fluffed things

Wow, AlmondAndJoy- where do you get your Carefresh?! Costs me about $20 a 50 litre bag and I use one a week. What warehouse? - hope there's one here in Cincinnati! And I personally do think it's the best for the pigs and for the humans too.

Yes, please share your secret. Carefresh is about $20.00 dollars a bag here too. The boys have their palace cleaned every other day.

What I got to say is, there's other alternatives, like fleece, or pelleted bedding with some shavings ontop, and lots more of different things.

That's true, casper. There are many different beddings out there and it's a matter of deciding what is best for one's own situation.

It's $9.69 for a 23 liter bag and about $23.00 for a 50 liter bag here in CT, I wish I lived out there! I wounld save lots of money. When I was at walmart the other day I saw something that is exactly like carefresh but way cheaper! The only problem is that they only sell 10 liter bags so I bought tons of them!!

I also use kiln-dried pine with hay on top, and it works fine for my pigs.
