I think he is improving ... which is nice. I actually gave him a bath (and made sure he was dry ... although the hair dryer isn't his favorite thing) ... he was so filthy for some reason. He's the one who had the bad mite problem and I stopped th Ivermectin and baths when he got sick but I started the treatment again.

I'm so pleased things seem to be moving in the right direction. Peter Gurney recommends the Sudafed at 0.2ml a day www.oginet.com/pgurney/respiration.htm. I used it on Zigs once when his breathing was very congested (don't usually go for the human meds approach but he could barely breathe and I was desperate) and it did seem to improve things. It's quite potent, so I gave it in between meals and away from any other meds just to ease any effect on his stomach.

Thanks ... I did get a bottle of the Sudafed but he seemed to be responding so I held off giving it to him. I'll keep it as a back-up treatment or to ward off the evil spirits.

Yeah, then I've got the rabbit who stopped eating and the reason is he probably got "nailed" by one of the cats when she went into his condo. He's been at the vet's house since Sat. and won't go home prior to Wed. He has massive swollen cheeks/jaw and she thinks it's an abscess that isn't opening and she hasn't been successful in releasing.

I pick him up tomorrow and will start a thread I guess. The swelling has not gone down and he's been at the vet's home since Saturday.

How is he Kathy? I hope hes improving! I think I'm getting a bit overwhelmed ... with the rabbit with eight things that need to be done daily ... Max who is improving as is Izzy .. they both just need antibiotics long-term morning and night ... and the hamster who once again is losing his hair ... being treated for mites but the vet thought it might be a tumor or something .. and then the two who have lice .. no clue how they got it.

Oh it must be draining Kathy being a nurse, you really do a great job and I'm sure if the animals could speak, they'd thank you a million times over :)Just knowing you are helping them is enough thanks isn't it . I hope everyone keeps improving and that the hamster dosn't have a tumour

Max is doing better and the two (new to him but ones that I've seen before) vets want him on antibiotics for at least three months. I thought I saw him popcorn the other day so he's improving, which is nice. Tyler, on the hand, is more active and eating, but his jaw really looks awful now. The vet will x-ray him on Sat. when she checks him. I hope it's not a jaw or tooth abscess since they are really hard to treat and cost a fortune and reoccur.

Zigs had one of those - he had to have one of his lower incisors removed as it had rotted through, although he did fine with just one. His wasn't too bad - he had to have it cleaned out twice at the vets, but with a lot of flushing at home and antibiotics, it only took a few weeks before it was completely healed.
Hurrah for a popcorning Max!

She didn't do an x-ray after all but will do so next week whent he swelling goes down. I'll take some photos when I cleanout the area tonight. She removed the scab and the area was gross ... full of toothpaste-like pus. She worked on him for 1-1/2 hours and he has a huge open area on his jaw/chin. She still thinks that it's from a cat bite but the cat who grooms him and sleeps with him doesn't have all of her teeth. It's possible it is really a tooth problem since one pus socket was deep and right underneath the tooth that she trimmed during his annual visit a couple of weeks ago. If the abscess returns and the tooth is the culprit, it will be pulled. He's to get baytril (liquid), penicillin (injection), metacam, saline flush followed by a betadine flush, carefresh bedding with just soft grass hay plus pellets and veggies.

Oh poor Tyler, it does sound like a tooth problem dosn't it. I know they don't like to extract bunny teeth in England, but I hope it works for Tyler. It sounds very sore and infected

I hope he responds to the treatment in the meantime. The pus can be so thick can't it - it can be hard work flushing it out properly.

Gosh, that does look nasty - poor old Tyler. I really hope it improves soon.
Is he quite relaxed when it comes to having it cleaned out? Zig's abscess wasn't as bad, but he was so calm and relaxed having it flushed, even though it's obviously not a pleasant experience for them. It made it a heck of a lot easier for me.

He's not exactly relaxed. He might prefer being at the vet's home and having her do the cleaning. There is still a bit of pus so not sure if it's a tooth or not. Have to go clean it again now.
