I have two female guinea pigs, I was wondering if it is still necessary for me to get them neutered/spayed?

If you aren't going to put them together with a boy then you don't need to. And Plus you don't know any boy guinea pigs do you.

Even if a boy was going to live with the sows I wouldn't spay the sows. It's a much simpler operation that involves less risk (though still a considerable amount) to have a boar desexed.

Not unless you put them with boys. Otherwise do not neuter them my girlfriends did this once to her sow because she was going to put her in with a boar, now she regrets it since her pig developed complications.

Nope. I find it cruel since you don't have permission from the cavy, and your taking away his 'manhood' , and that just sounds really harsh thing to do. That's my opinion, and I know no others will agree.

If you but a male in there, neuter the male not the females because it is a simpler operation for a male.
Caspertheghost, we neutered my dogs, its not really a bad thing its to protect them and your self from having about 10 puppies.

Katie, Why do you feel it is necessary to get your females spayed? If you have 2 females and dont plan on getting any more guinea pigs, nor males than no. It is a very complicated and some times expensive operation. Do you want a boy guinea pig is that why? If you do then it is far better and sometimes cheaper to get a boy and the extra cage/supplies than it would be to have 2 girls spayed. (And yes it will have to be supervised around the females.) And if you have the funds and you must have a male, then yes it is far easier to have the male neutered. Although, many people will have a different opinion.

I didn't say dogs & cats, I said 'cavies'. My cats are neutered, but my dog isn't.

Well you don't have permission from a cat or dog either.

But they like to run around- and its cruel to put them in a cage.

Plus it's much, much, much dangerous for cavies than cats & dogs.
