hi...i went to get my guinea pigs and rabbit in off th lawn yesterday (they were out in their run) and i noticed tht one of th two males..charlie was just sitting in one spot shaking..i picked him up and took him inside..he is 4 years old and has always been a bit of a weakling..his brother is fat and has never suffered with any health problems..wheras charlie has suffered almost constanlty with mange and other small ailments ever since i bought him..when this morning he appeared to be showing no signs of improvement i took him to th vet..who said tht he appeared to have meningitis ....does anybody have any information on meningitis in guinea pigs? also my umbrella cockatoos use th indoor run tht he sleeps in..during th day whilst th guinea pigs n rabbit are out on th lawn...could they hav passed this onto him? i am very worried as, like i mentioned before..he has never seemed to have a very good immune system! Any help will be greatly appreciated Thankyou rach x

I am not sure about in guinea pigs but someone at a elementary school in my comunity had it and they died 1-2 days after they had it. It happens very quick. You will need to treat your other pigs too so they do not catch it. I hope its different in guinea pigs because for people its horrible.

I haven't heard of a pig getting meningitis. Was the vet guinea-pig knowledgeable? Rabbits can be carriers of Bordetella and pass it along to rabbits. Plus, birds can be messy and dirty and if the droppings are in the run, then they pigs/rabbit could get sick. I would bring him inside immediately and try to get him back on the road to good health. What medication were you given and what were his other ailments that he's had in the past and how was he treated?
