I got gerty guinea pig because someone recommended it and they didn't have what I wanted. The old food is something weird and smelly. Its not hartz its.....8 in 1 premium. I have hartz hay though. Now the bad had measuerments in ounces so I just mixed an 8th of a cup together of each!

I would not be too worried if she is not eating many pellets; hay is the main part of their diet anyway. Good to hear that she is enjoying her veggies. Just make sure that the hay you're giving her is nice and fresh and lots of it.

The best hay if you cant find fresh available at your budget and the places you said you shopped is Kaytee Timothy Hay ...its lovely and smells sweet and doesnt have a lot of twiggy stems...just sort throught the bags until you find the greenest, sweetest smelling bunch..like I do.

A lot of people at C&C cages said that Hartz brand was bad for the piggies and could even harm them. Is this true?

If the pellets that you are giving are "weird and smelly" ... they might be bad. If so, I wouldn't use them. This page has some info on why people do not use certain brands: www.geocities.com/gpigluv/nutrition.html I did a search for Hartz's brand and couldn't find the complete list of ingredients. It's possible that the preservative is ethoxyquin which is used in other pet food as well. Some more info, including that on ethoxyquin, may be found here: www.nzymes.com/Articles/pet_foods_whats_really_in_them.htm

I personally think the best guinea pig pellets are Oxbow's Cavy Cuisine, for a young piggy it would be Cavy Performance. Both are very high in fibre. www.oxbowhay.com/link.sp?page=CavyPerformanceGerty is just full of artificial colours. That pigamid is good Kathy on that first link. Like Teebers has said, hay is the main food in a piggies diet. Is she munching on hay at all Marg? Most like the normal meadow type hay that you can buy in a bale. It usually smells very fresh and has lots of green bits in. Pet store hay isn't usually very good, dusty and brown etc. Mine have a good handful of Timothy hay everyday, its a little expensive to keep giving them a constant supply, but is great as a nice supplement.

Is gerty guinea pig food bad for them? I was looking for the oxbow food but they didn't have it they had gerty, something with an m and lots of kaytee. I purchased kaytee alfalfa hay which I thought was a good brand.

I dont think so, mine were on this brand for a while and I think it's a bit fattening but otherwise okay.

Jasmine was on it for a while and still gets it occasionally because she wasn't eating any pellets at all. The vet did suggest that I stop giving it to her since she didn't want her to gain any more weight. I had been using Oxbow's pellets but recently got a 50 pound bag of pellets at a local feed store since the Oxbow pellets are expensive to give multiple pigs.

It is rather expensive, but I'd always recommend it. They can't pick out their favourite bits and leave the rest. Unless I'm wronge, it has the highest percentage of fibre in it. Fiver our bunny who has hardly eaten hay from being a baby has a constant supply of the bunny version and it really does help to keep his digestive system healthy.

I have to say that the link Kathy posted from gpigluv.... I didnt agree with most of the "not to give you guinea pig" brands. I mean Katee Timothy Hay is a good brand I have used it for the last ten years no problem. I have also used the Hartz Nutr. pellets for a long time and all of my guinea's have been healthy and fine and not over weight. I think some of the links you read are based on the persons opinion. If you really don't know what to think just ask your exotic vet what is good for your guinea pig. Buying the best and most budget friendly thing available is usually what some people have to do.
