The vet said the blood tests for Zippy and LG came back with the liver counts really high. He prescribed Milk Thistle to help lower the count. The office manager called me with the info, and the doctor is out until some time next week, so I can't ask him.
Does anyone know what count he's talking about? I looked in my med book, but it doesn't list liver counts separately, and if it's covered under an abbreviation, I don't know what it is. Has anyone used Milk Thistle before, and do you know where to get it. It's $24 for a small bottle at the vet, so I'd like to find a less expensive source, if it's really helpful to the liver.
I haven't checked GuineaLinx, and am headed there, now. I plan to search the internet for information, but I thought someone here might have been through this before, and know about it.

I've been all over the internet looking for living function info, with little luck, at least not for cavies. I'll go back to the human info for the counts, to see if I can get terms I can translate to the cavy info I have. This is the stuff the vet precribed. He charged me $24. I can get it here, for $14.50. All it says is it promotes healthy liver function. www.herbspro.com/17256/MilkThistle.htm#

Nothing on GuineaLinx. I went to all their links, and found lots of stuff on kidney problems, but not liver problems. KJ gave me a quick tutorial on it. The link you gave me has some really great stuff. I didn't even know I wanted that stuff until KJ told me about it. I'm definitely going to get some of the tinctures to have on hand. Thanks!!

Hiya
Sorry Ive only just seen this and should be doing my studying, but I just had to reply.
You can grow milk thistles in your garden. Ours appear by nature, but I am sure you could get hold of the seeds from Sally at pampurredpiggies.co.uk or from Galens Garden.
If not, let me know.

*EDIT*
Just checked on ebay and you can buy the seeds on there - really cheap - if you cannot buy these in America on your ebay - please email me and we can sort something out.

Milk Thistle and Dandelions are great for liver recovery. The pigs love them here a lot.

I talked to the vet, who said it's the blood serum count that's high. He also said the liver is the most resillient organ in the body. It can be 2/3 destroyed and if cleansed, will repair itself. I don't know if that's true, but he had no reason to say it if it's not. I told Anna I found the same extract I paid $24.50 for at the vets, on line for $14 including shipping and handling. The vet said the milk thistle usually clears up whatever is bothering the liver, and the kids should be fine.
I worry that I'm overlooking something that's harming them, or doing something that's harming them. The vet said of the hundreds of possible causes, both environmental and internal, I wasn't doing anything to cause it. That was a relief. The kids like the milk thistle, so it's no problem adding it to their drinking water.
I'll keep my usual close eye on their behavior, but the vet said the kids should be just fine. (breathe sigh of relief)
