I was wondering if ProBoards lets one use a domain name of ones choosing for their forums. In other words, can you register/use something like www.wheekers.com? At www.godaddy.com the fee is only about $9 per year to register a domain name.

Would be worth looking into Kathy - it would also mean that I could access it from school! haha

It would be easier for me to locate rather than go to the GPF award section, click on Jackie's award, then enter her website and click on piggy forum, and then click on the Wheekers' drawing.

Good plan Josie! Plus if you use the same computer most of the time, it can just be bookmarked.
We'll think about it anyway, but we generally prefer plans that don't involve us spending any money lol. I know that in itself isn't much but there'll always be a lot of little things we could spend money on and it all adds up, and we both already pay for our own websites.

I find fiddling around boring lol. It is bookmarked, but I still type it in, matter of habit now.
This forum is very good, easy to manouvere, you and jackie did a good job!

Not everyone uses the same computer thus bookmaking isn't always available. When I did a search I got this: "Did you mean "whicker's". As for spending money, my domain name costs $30 yearly so $9 is very nice (I didn't know about it before). What I was referring to was keeping it easy to remember for the members and general public, which is what is usually suggested when one creates a website or domain name. Most of the guinea pig forums that I can think of all have a domain name and are easy to access directly, however, one does not always need to be like everyone else.

It was originally going to be linked from a website (called Wheekers) but that didn't happen - just the forum!
Josie does your address bar not have a drop down bit where all the previous addresses you've typed in are saved? You can just choose one, or if you start typing it automatically gives you the possible options for what comes next (from teh addresses saved)?

I don't really find "wheekers.proboards32.com" to be that hard to remember anyway.

If I type in wheekers cavy forum, we are first on the list with aol and google, but I did see 'did you mean whickers' on google but just below that, wheekers is first in the list. That might be easier for you Kathy, rather than going through a few links. We are 5th in line for Ask Jeeves search engine, so we are getting there.

I don't really find "http://wheekers.proboards32.com" to be that hard to remember anyway. That's not the point ... not everyone knows that is how it is listed or that is the URL. The name of the forum is Wheekers, not wheekers.proboards32. Don't shoot the messenger, guys. Remember, this is a section for suggestions and feedback. I was just suggesting a way to make it easier for folks. $9 is NOT that much to pay and that is what is normally done if it's not linked from a website such as "Wheekers". That, plus having it so that it is user-friendly to those who use AOL, would make it nice in case it hits the big time and becomes the number one forum out there (your numbers are climbing).

We will certainly think about Kathy. Do you know that site very well?
Whats 9 dollars in English money? about £5.00?

I use 3 different computers..and I have google, AOL, yahoo and some others and I have never had a problem with it popping up first page. Also if you do a cavy/guinea pig search it's there also. The url drop box at the top doesnt always work if you search for something in the search as in google engine field. You can also clear the search field and left click and that brings up a search history. I just bookmark or add it to my email address list so it will be where ever I go.

Hubby has his own server so the only thing I paid for was to register my domain. If anyone is wanting to change server companies I think hubby can do it for cheap...not sure can ask though...

What I'm suggesting is something so that people don't have to do searches. I'm not familiar with www.godaddy.com other than the fact that I read about it in the newspaper and found out that it was really inexpensive. My website costs a small fortune to run: the domain name, counters, e-cards, premium package (so I get to use a template), no-pop up ads, cable connection, photo holding website, etc. I made the website originally for myself and I don't know HTML and I don't want pop-up ads so I paid a little more.

I'll send you the $9. I just was sorting through things today and found that mine is $34 per year. cutecavy: I was suggesting that it might be easier for people to access this forum by using something easy to remember ... such as www.wheekers.com (or like your rather than what it currently is: wheekers.proboards32.com

Aww thats thoughtful of you Kathy, but honestly if Treen and I decide to have a domain for Wheekers, it won't break the bank I don't pay for my own domain name for my site, so far they've included it in the yearly payment.
