He IS cute but monkeys sorta scare me. We just had this incident here where some folks went to bring a birthday cake to their pet chimp. They had had to give him up as they get stronger and meaner when older, so he was living in a retirement place. Three other chimps there were jealous and busted out of their cages and attacked the couple. The man has his nose and part of his face, his testicles and a foot CHEWED off and the woman lost fingers. Apes and monkeys are just TOO human to be pets I think. But I do feel especially sorry for the orangatans and gorillas who have a hard time in the wild. Still, I'm glad you rescued the little fella.

[glow=lime,2,300]What people dont relize is Chimps are different. Chimps will kill members of their group! If a new male comes on their turf or disruprts them the first thing they go for is the testicles and eyes. Its just their nature. Chimps cant help it, thats how they live in the wild. A Chimp is a big monkey and needs well over the space ANYONE can give it. They dont stay in the same spot they move around. But my monkey barely weighs over 2lbs full grown and is at the bottom of the food chain where as Chimps are higher up. There is a HUGE difference. I think its sad to see exotics treated like humans or normal cats and dogs. To own an exotic I think you should really know about them. Most people who own big cats or even monkeys only know they come form Africa, when not all of them do. When we first got ours they were feeding him Kool aid and Fruit Loops. That was really irresponsible on them!!! They shouldnt get a monkey if they cant or dont know how to care for it properly. But that goes for every pet.[/glow]

Don't even get me started on people who have big cats-shame on them! You are right about chimps and people shouldn't have them as pets either. Your little Shibby IS adorable and I am glad you have him instead of some idiot who doesn't know how to care for him. But ideally, wouldn't it be nice if ALL exotic pets could remain in the wild where they belong?

[glow=lime,2,300]I would LOVE to see them all living wild in their natural enviornment. But the ones who were born into a life of captivity by some dumb person should atleast have a home with someone who knows what they need. We are in the middle of building him a 48x48x50 cage in the back yard so he can play outside during the days when it isnt too hot or cold.[/glow]

I know it comes natural to Chimps, but they will even hunt down another species of monkey. Until I watched a film about them doing that , I used to think they were veggy eaters. Apart from the alpha silver back gorilla getting angry because he's proctecting his group or position, they always seem very gentle apes. They definatly didn't do their reserch when Planet of the Apes was screened. I bet Shibby will love having an area to play outside

[glow=lime,2,300]I hope so
We take him outside every day. He has a little belt with a string attached to it, leashes are too heavy for him. He likes to carry his string and we hold the end so he doesnt run away bc he is so scared! He is terrified to go outside! He was never let out of his cage before we got him, the only time he went outside was when someone was selling him. We think he might be thinking we are selling him. But we would never let him go!!! Everyday he gets a little braver and goes a little bit farther into the yard, we would rather let him move at his own pace than push him.[/glow]

Aww bless him, I bet he does remember his past. I'm sure as time goes on his confidence will grow won't it.
Your being really nice and patient with him to, animals really respond to caring owners.

Yes, thank goodness there are people like you who take in these discarded creatures. People should stick to already domesticated animals and not try and tame the ones that ought to remain in the wild. Shibby and the rest are lucky to have you!

Aww gorgeous photo's TimsCavyPrincess, that last one is so funny ;D
He looks very happy from the pictures. In someways if its the only life they have known, they must adjust more quickly. Its awful though if that poor little monkey Darwin is so neglected. Do you have a link to the site at all.? Maybe theres an animal welfare organisation that can help.
I imagine like humans, you can tell when a monkey is sad or happy can't you just by their facial expressions alone.

[glow=lime,2,300]Ill look for a link. It seems like the guy feeds him right and takes care of him fairly good. I just think he needs a bigger cage and more socialization. The man works all day and Darwin is cooped up in a cage. Yes, we work and I go to school, but he has a dog to play with. Also, we leave at 7:00 am and are home by 1:30pm. So he is only away from us for a few hours. Otherwise he is near us the whole time we are home. He sleeps in my moms room on one of the bed rails.[/glow]

[glow=lime,2,300]I think he might be afraid of someone rolling on him! haha! Sometimes he wont sleep in her room and he will sleep in a dog bed with his woman (a stuffed monkey beanie baby) and his puppy, the shih tzu we bought for him. Im going to try and get a picture of him riding his shih tzu, he rides on its back all over the house! its his lil car![/glow]

[glow=lime,2,300]He is very easy to fall in love with Hehe yes he loves "his woman" he gets mad if you touch her. He barely weighs 2lbs. His little dog loves him to death. Him and her are inseperable!! Hes a little theif though! and very nosey and greedy! If you have something he HAS to have one too!! He wont let his puppy have ANY toys! If you open up one of his food containers and let him take one he will sit there and grab some for all 4 hands then try to run away. He used to have to take a vitamin C pill when we first got him. We would walk into the room and act like we dropped it on accident then he would run as fast as he could to steal it and eat it. I dont think he ever relized he was being tricked [/glow]
