Wow he is gorgeous. Are you frim the US? Monkeys are not common pets in the UK. Where did you get him from? Where does he live? Does he roam free? I love monkeys & he is gorgeous... just not sure I could keep one as a pet. It would make me sad

[glow=lime,2,300]My mom used to own an animal compound for animals who were born in captivity and/or rescued from research facilities. Yes im in the US.
We no longer own the animal compound, a friend of my moms now owns it.
But my mom saw this ad in the paper for a Chimp that was rescued form research so she called on it. When she went to see it she was horrified! It was a squirell monkey and the lady was keeping it in a bird cage made for parakeets! My mom went to college for 10 years and did behavioral research on animals in the wild, such as the songs of gibbons.
She ended up buying him. When we got him home he was soaked in urine and had a rabbit harness that was way to small on him. All he would do was attack us.
We bought him a huge outdoor aviary that we put in our living room and he ended up getting really used to us.
Now he doesnt even know what a pen is, he roams the house. My mom bought him his own puppy and we cant get him to leave us alone! he is our baby! Although he is a theif we love him! we had to monkey proof our house, its much like if you have a 2 year old.
But hes happy, he doesnt even know what a leaash is. He goes outside with us on our shoulder, he gets a bath weekly. He changed so much from when we got him. It just goes to show you what a little love can do!!!! [/glow]

Aww he's gorgeous , its really nice that he has the freedom to runaround. Its also good your mum knows about his needs in captivity. He looks a little like that little monkey in the film 'Monkey Trouble' What does he like to eat TimsCavyPrincess, I can see he likes nuts

Aww so he uses a giant potty! Oh isn't he clever! Does he communicate with you in monkey language when he wants something?

[glow=lime,2,300]haha yes we learned to understand "shibby language"
If he likes what your during he purrs like a cat If he wants something he looks around you and does this real short squeek like"where is it" If hes mad he does a series of quick wheek type noises
And best of all when he first meets you, you'll know if he likes you because he will sit on your shoulder and open in his legs to flash you his pee pee.
And he loves to look down girls shirts.
He really is like a teenage boy[/glow]

[glow=lime,2,300]Hehe ya until you have something he wants. If I put pellets in a bucket to feed the animals outside he takes 2 handfuls are runs. When your feeding him he steals food from the box and shoves it in his mouth and all four hands (2 back) then tries to run away.[/glow]

That is just the sweetest thing! I am so glad that one poor monkey has found a good responsible home! Tell us more about squirrel monkeys- where do they originate? How big do they grow, long do they live, what is their social structure in the wild?

[glow=lime,2,300]His name is Shibby
They come from South America and he is full grown. So as you can tell they dont get very big at all. But they have a really large brain for their size. They are pretty skidish and always stay up high away from danger. Luckily, he is so comfortable here that he runs around on the floor and nothing really scares him anymore.
They live in groups called troups with anywhere from 6 to 36 monkeys.[/glow]

Great information TimsCavyPrincess, I know gorilla's are an ape, do they have like an alpha male like gorilla's do?

[glow=lime,2,300]Yes, like all groups of animals there is an alpha. But they act more like a wolf pack. They are really close and look out for eachother and get food together for protection. They are really small monkeys so the more the better to them.[/glow]
