I had a very sweet hamster, and two evil ones I wouldn't get a dwarf one as a lot of them can be nippy. My golden hamster was the sweetest little thing, he used to be my brother's but he got bored of him so I looked after him for the rest of his days He used to run around my bedroom, and I had other assorted pets living in my room at various times and they used to be scared of him lol. I heard males have a better temperement than females, but I'm not sure if that is true, I've only had male hamsters. I will write more, gotta go to school now! ;D

Hi! Definitely depends on whether you're getting a dwarf or syrian as to what I would advise. Check out Hamsterific.com- lots of great articles, etc on there (a few written by me *grins*)
I house all my hamsters in converted bins, which I recommend for any hamster. If you check out my website, you can see some pictures of our bins and there are also instructions on how to ventilate the lids.
I sure hope your daughter enjoys her new friend!

I always loved my hammies. True the dwarfs can be nippy but the big fat Teddybears and Goldens are sweet. I like the males better myself. I'd go to that site as I just can't tell you all I know here. Good luck!

Those are great cages ;D I used to like the sound of my hammies moving around, it helped me sleep, I figured they'd keep the monsters away lol

I never gave my hamsters a wheel, but did make sure their cages had horizontal bars so that they could climb. They really seemed to like that better and therefor never got all neurotic about the wheels. Luckily all of mine lived out their natural lifetimes and died of old age. They also LOVED toilet paper tubes AND fragrance-free toilet paper to shred and make nests with. Also, their FAVORITE food was MEAL WORMS! I'm not sure many people know that they love to eat bugs and meal worms were the best! Mine would practically swoon for their nightly three worms! Yukky but cute!

:-*are you getting a new hamster or did she already have it? if it is new leave it alone for a day to adjust. give it some toys and as a gp, new water and food everyday. if the food is gone quick they are storing it. i have two dwarfs and they bit me only twice (food on hands oops) be sure not to put in a bedroom because they are awake at night and can be quite noisy. Bellatrix, males are more behaved than females . one thing to make sure is have a wheel and a ball for it to run it when it is out of the cage. do not leave it unsupervised (youll never find it again!) i hope this helped! Amanda oh-crittertrail cages are the most fun for hamsters or one that has lots of tubes!

The Crittertrails look really nice but unfortunately they don't provide much ventilation and they are hard to clean and retain odors. Did your daughter ever get the hamster?

Thanks for the tips Amanda We are still reading information Kathy. My brother actual gave us a cage, I'll take a pic soon. It might not be big enough for a golden hamster, its has 3 layers though.
