This is my Eli- who just seems to keep getting bigger and bigger! haha! I need to find my smaller scale, but on the big one- he registered somewhere between 60 and 80 gram (not very accurate reading in other words).

Oh he is tubby isn't he, very cute!! Maybe he needs to start a mousy diet Mice are usually very active arn't they, could he be eating a bit too much mouse pellets.?Not quite the same, but our bunny Thumper was on a pellet diet and after a while he slowly began to loose weight. I'm not sure about mice though as they have high energy level don't they?

Certain colours are linked to an obesity gene- goldens, creams, and agoutis. I have started removing all the seeds from his mix- so hopefully that will help. I also moved him into a new cage with a new (quieter) wheel and he seems to like it better. He's cute fat, but don't want him having a little Mousy heart-attack!

He does look like Gus-Gus in Cinderella! Or like the ones in the fat experiments that scientists do ( THEY are RATS for using them).

Hubby isn't keen on a rats tail Josie, I really like rats.
Does Eli live on his own Jenna. I don't know very much about mice, do boys get a long together?

Yes- Eli lives alone. Boys rarely get on. I have another boy, Bentley- who lives alone, too. I also have 4 sisters that share a cage and then a mom, Louise- that has her 6 daughters living with her. That is a fine example of boys not getting on. Louise had 6 girls and 5boys that survived to fecundity. I seperated the boys out at 4wks old- between six seven weeks old, one boy had systematically starved his 4 brothers to death- no fighting, no warning- he just bullied them to where they couldn't eat. Since they were all the same color, I had no idea until I found two dead and two dying on cage-cleaning day that it was the same mouse eating and drinking the entire time. The surviving boy went to a new home. He is called Adolph now. By the way- I love rattie tails they are like silky ropes. When my rat boys are on my shoulders, I like to tug on their tail gently, held between my lips- to get them to wrestle a bit or they'll snuffle your ear or give you a kiss. Rats are darlings.

I love rats and mice too but my husband would REALLY have a heart attack if I had one - he barely tolerates the pigs WITHOUT tails. I don't know what it is about their little tails- sorta like people thinking snakes are wet and slimy when they are really dry and silky and soft. Rats and mice are SMART too.
