I still don't get how the sesame seed bun was supposed to throw us off the scent. I bet you probably had Big Bird as one of the other avatars...

How has she been going? Any improvement?
Pyometras are associated with hormonal changes (often involving cystic ovaries) which is why they're associated with a recent heat, and there is definitely a significant risk of recurrence even if she does respond to the antibiotics. My advice would be to let your vet pursue further diagnostics (xrays or ultrasound if available) if you can afford it, and at least get a quote for the hysterectomy if she is diagnosed with pyometra.
yodelpig is right that a lot of times the success of these surgeries come down to the experience of the surgeon in working with exotics but provided it is a success, the patient usually does recover well with good nursing care :3

Without doing further diagnostics it is difficult to know for sure whether the infection is localised to the vagina or is involving the uterus as well, however if the vet thinks she is abdominally distended that can certainly be an indication that the uterus is involved. This is known as a metritis or pyometra and can be associated with a recent heat, but are just as often considered spontaneous.
Certainly monitor her closely and if she continues to go downhill or the discharge from the vagina doesn't seem to be improving over the next couple of days I would recommend you be in contact with your vet again.
