The halfies have turned 3 years old! So far they have had no serious health issues; Sphynx has a lump on her side, but it isn't growing, and doesn't seem to be affecting her at all, and she has developed very funky-looking cataracts, which look quite striking in black eyes. Rats dont have great eyesight anyway, so they don't bother her. Phoenix has also got a very small one that came up just recently, and has had a mildly gunky ear. Otherwise, they are as healthy as can be. Sphynx has completely lost the use of her back legs, which happens in old age with rats, but can still climb around, and sprint when the mischief takes her. Phoenix still has limited use of her back legs, but was always quieter than her crazy sister. They have outlived their nine brothers and sisters, so I feel very fortunate that the healthy genes seemed to have landed on them! In view of their age, I nicked a camera and tried to take a few nice pictures of them. Phoenix: Sphynx: (cataracts dont show up in the pictures) And together:

Happy birthday ratties - what a great age! Lovely photos, although they were slightly distracting for my kids when they were supposed to be getting ready for school this morning!

haha glad to be of service Treen....
Well tbh, they're pretty spoiled already! They get to live basically 24/7 in my bed now, and they consider themselves very ill-used if they have to go back into their cage. They got to have some weak milky tea for a treat, because they love tea, but I don't give it to them usually!
(btw, what is it with animals and tea? Reuben loves it; he'll fetch used tea bags out of bins to eat, and climb up onto chairs to get to mugs! )

I don't doubt that they are spoilt at all love, we are all guilty of that on this forum. I used to have guinea pigs sleeping in my bed with me, a long time ago now but the memory was wonderful, they all used to snuggle up and one used to go to sleep in the crook of my arm. Lovely memories.

I'm a coffee drinker, so I haven't had any tea bags stolen from the trash, lol That is so cure! I'm glad the girls are doing well, and love the pictures. Happy Birthday, ladies

My husband has an unsavoury habit of leaving teabags on teaspoons where he's sitting to have a cuppa (on side tables or the floor). When our pigs were free range, we'd often find a bag in the process of being torn open. I can't remember the pigs actually eating the tea, just enjoying ripping up the bag!

*cough* I share your husband's habit. d:
My sister's new house has a macadamia nut tree, so the girls got a few of them as a treat yesterday! It was with a bit of sadness I packed away their cage today. It's quite large, they're hardly ever in it, and I'm not planning on getting any more, so I figured it'd best go. I'm using the extra room to expand Mr. Rapiti's pen; he's been missing Nermal since she died, so I hope the little beggar likes it.

Aren't Macadamia nuts big? Not sure why I think that, as I can't recall ever seeing one. That must have been a hoot, watching them eat it Packing up the old stuff is never easy. I hope he'll be okay

I have certainly never tried these nuts, the most exotic nut I have ever tried has to be a peanut LOL!!

Not really, they're about maybe 2 cm diameter, I guess? I've never really thought of them as exotic, but I looked them up, and I see they are an Australasian nut. I guess they're only common around here!

Well there we differ, I can't stand most nuts, or peanuts! Macadamias aren't too bad, but they're not something I go out of my way to eat.
My rat-girls and Seth are still doing really well. Seth will be 15 years old in May, and people always mistake him for a young puppy! There are some signs of aging, of course, but on the whole, he's doing fantastically. Much to my family's disappointment. He's not too popular around here...sadly.
As for the cats...a neighbourhood tom's family had to do a runner, and they left him behind. He wasn't fussed, he knew where to move into. You get three guesses where. We got him fixed, de-flea'd, and wormed (I don't think he'd ever had any of that before), and he's settled into a loving, affectionate, slightly-clingy house cat.
Except for his jealousy-issues. He doesn't like sharing with other cats. Which is unfortunate, because he picked a house that already has six cats living in it!

I hope he gets over the jealousy. We had a very jealous cat, and he finally started marking all over the house. We had to get rid of him. We had four other cats, and our Persian was the dominant cat. He wanted to be dominant, and just couldn't accept that Besine beat him in every encounter. Good luck with that. I'm glad Seth is doing so well. I don't know why he's not popular, but I always figured we were doing something right, for our dogs to live to ripe old ages. I'm glad he still has a lot of puppy in him

Awww thank you for taking the abandoned tomcat in. I know he's not keen on them, but what do the other cats make of him?!
I like macadamia nuts but they're not my favourite - plus they're not cheap over here either. We eat quite a lot of nuts (without any salt or coating on) - especially brazils, pecans, cashews, almonds and pistachios. They're a good hearty snack, better for us than the extra chocolate we'd otherwise eat!

We can find those nut mixes most of the time, but rarely find Macademia nuts. They tend to be in things, like cookies and cakes, and when we do find them, they are much more expensive than the others. More like cashews and pistachios in price.
