A trick a vet taught us long ago was to establish boundaries for Mac by only going that far when you walk him anywhere, and making the boundaries visually obvious to him. Maybe hammer poles with a cloth flag or something in at obvious run away points, and walk him just to those poles, then turn around. Make it clear you can't go past that. Then if he starts chasing a smell or animal, when he reaches that point, he'll at least stop and think about it, and that's often all you need to call him back under control. He really is gorgeous!!!

Had some fun with Mac this week. Came home (only away a short time to collect kids from school) and opened utility room door to see this: He had completely killed a stuffed cat scratcher. Problem was it was stuffed with catnip and it wasn't until late that night I realised he must have eaten the lot. I'm certain it basically made him high. He went completely loopy until about 7.00 that night, really over excited about everything, running and jumping at us etc etc. He is an exuberant dog as just a puppy but this was behaviour out of the ordinary for him. Also please keep your fingers crossed for him as he is going to be neutered on Monday. I know it's a simple operation for male dogs but still he'll be gone all day at the vets and I'll worry until he's home.

Haha! Looks like he had some fun there! Hope there's no repeat performance though!
I will certainly keep everything crossed on Monday - however routine the surgery, it's never easy to feel relaxed until you have seen them through it. Does being neutered change a dog's behaviour significantly at any age? Probably a dumb question but I don't know much about dogs!

Mac is sure an adorable boy. I know it was naughty what he did to the scratch post but it made me smile!
I am sure everything will go well for Mac on monday, I will be thinking of you and Mac.

My lovely boy has gone in this morning for his operation. I'll be so happy when he is home again tonight but dreading trying to keep him quiet and calm for the next 10 days until he gets his stitches out!

The very observant out there may have noticed a subtle change to the title of this thread. For well over 10 years now I've dreamt of owning a certain type of dog but they are big energetic dogs that need a big house and garden and lots of time to exercise them. Last week one came up in an Irish rescue and I was told about her. I was the first person to enquire about her and then went through the checks. Was a very nail biting week but yesterday I made a 4 hour round trip to Donegal and back (plus stops) to go and adopt my dream girl. Her name is Molly and I think you'll be able to guess her breed very easily. She is 18 months old and already been spayed. Mac was neutered last week and got his stitches out yesterday morning. Mac made the trip with us and the initial meeting at the foster home went brilliantly. All got pretty intense and bit aggressive last night but today gone much better between the two of them. They are both lying here flat out at my feet right now. Molly is in good health, been vaccinated etc by previous owners (they said just didn't have time for her). Coat needs a little grooming as bit dirty and matted in places but nothing major. I have licensed, insured and ID tagged her already. Just got to get her chipped now. So here are newpigs dogs: Molly (have you guessed what she is yet?)

Oh wow - I knew they were big dogs, but she looks even bigger than I was anticipating! They look like they're enjoying the warm weather! Silvie the cat is the same, she just sprawls. Look at those long supermodel legs she has! I really hope they continue to get on well. She looks like a lovely dog. And Mac's looks just as handsome and cheeky as ever!

They are the odd couple as he is twice the width of her and her legs are as high as his whole body but they match each other very well in energy levels.

Another dog, how exciting! Molly's gorgeous! It sounds like she and Mac are getting along well. I bet they will have lots of fun together and it will be nice for them to have each other for company when their 2 legged family members aren't home.

I so had not planned on getting another dog so soon and had thought would wait a year or so but wanted a red for so long and when Molly came up in the rescue I had to have her.
She is indeed an Irish Red Setter. She has a little drop of white on her chest but as I understand it that is not unusual and is a throw back to their Irish Red and White ancestry, although the red and whites are a white dog with red patches.

LOVE Molly. We had half setter/half golden retriever, huge, friendly and wonderful. Our purebred mutt, lol!!! I did notice the change in the title, and did wonder, hmmm? She's done it again. No better time or place to have your own zoo. Glad the stitches came out and Mac has his headgear off. Don't think he would have liked to wear that to meet his lady friend!!!

Odd couples are the best sort I met a Mac on the bus today - a black lab/staffy cross. He was lovely! He had proper lab ears though, so Mac's are better!
