Hi as many of you know me and my other half have 7 piggies. Well to add to add to the chaos we now have Jackson a border terrier jack Russell cross! He is gorgeous loving boy but we having issues potty training him, everytime we think we are getting somewhere he relapses, any tips from those of you who have potty trained a puppy would be very grateful!

Awww, he's adorable!!! Don't know what method you are using now. We did the use newspaper indoors then take it outdoors to show them what to do. It worked after a while, but probably not the best option. That was also several hundred years ago, lol, when we had our first dog. Get the next pup before the last dog is gone, and the older dog does the potty training. Try these sites. Cesar Millan is the Dog Whisperer from TV: www.cesarsway.com/Marc Marrone also has a TV pet show about all sorts of pets, Petkeeping with Marc Morrone: www.hallmarkchannel.com/petkeepingwithmarcmorrone/homeMay have to find the right episode on Pet Keeping and watch it. I think there are so many new ways, probably much better than what I used, and much more successful. Good luck. Even with accidents Jackson is one cute pooch!!!

I wanted to do clicker training with my dogs so joined a few forums that were recommended to me by experienced dog owners that I trust to learn more about it. I have been using the clicker and think it's such a fabulous and simple idea. I didn't use it for toilet training as both Mac and Molly had already got the basics - although Mac was having lots of accidents at the start whilst we learnt to read each other. What the forums did show me is that Cesar Milan's methods seem to be waning in popularity now. Positive reinforcement (like clicker training) is the way many people will recommend you work with your dog now whereas Cesar Milan's methods are apparently based on dominance. I found this article very interesting: drsophiayin.com/philosophy/dominance/I found with Mac at the start (and he was 4/5 months then) that he needed to be taken out regularly and for a puppy I understand the recommendation to be once an hour. My dogs also get their last meal at 4pm and get taken out for the last time around 11pm. I've read that using newspaper inside (as so many people will have done) confuses the dog into thinking it is acceptable to go inside. The advice now seems to be taking them out frequently and when they do start to go when outside pick a key word like toilet etc and praise them whilst using that word in the praise - once they have finished toileting give a treat immediately. Jackson is gorgeous.

New pic of jackson! A very elegant sleeping picture lol! Slowly getting there with jackson! Taking him out all the time and he has learnt the word pee pee. He know knows when he has been outside he gets a treat and sits there and waits for one lol! He goes outside but obviously he has not learnt to tell us then so its us just noticing the signs and taking him out!
He has grown so much in a week!

I am not at all surprised methods have changed since we had our last puppy, 1979 I think, lol. I figure Cesar Milans methods are more about behavior in the pack/family, which isn't the same as potty training. Dogs do need an alpha, or they become the alpha. I saw that too many times when the people let the dog do anything, and the dog learned no boundaries.
I have heard a lot affirming the possitive reinforcement, but also combine telling them they're good when they go outside, with telling them it's bad to go inside, so they understand. Outside/treat/praise, inside/no treat/banished to corner for 5 minutes, sort of thing.
I hope Jackson gets his bearings soon. It's just so much easier on everyone if there aren't any regular accidents, lol. He is an adorable puppy. I just wanted to reach in and rub that tummy, lol!!!

OMG, he's adorable!!! It may sound crazy, but I've always taken puppies out to pee every 20-30 minutes, especially when they're really young. The more they go, the fewer accidents and the quicker they learn where to go. Also, give small treats and lots of praise for every pee, no matter how small! I can't wait to see pics as he grows!

He is gorgeous!
Glad he's progressing with the toileting and I'm sure you'll have loads of advice from all directions! Some of it will be conflicting so most importantly you need to choose what kind of training you're going to use and stick with it as repetition is the key with puppies! The best method I've ever found which is kind of similar to what lonestarpiggies is saying, is the method we had to use on the guide dog puppy I had for a year. Just keep taking him out to where you want him to go, as often as you can while he's small and especially as soon as he wakes up from a nap or after a meal and pick your word or phrase and just say it whenever he does the deed! After a while you'll be able to take him outside and use the word before he goes and it will encourage him to go to the toilet but at first it's all about catching him do what he needs to where you want him too and saying the word as he's going to the toilet so he can associate it. Ignore any accidents in the house and if you catch him looking like he's about to have an accident, quickly distract him with an excited voice and take him outside so everything's done with good associations!
Good luck and let us know how he gets on with plenty more cute photos please!!

My Golden does that, too, which I've always thought is odd. Usually a male dog's favorite thing to do is mark things when out for a walk, lol.

Gorgeous pics, and the one of him with hubby is precious!!!
Perhaps there is a smell he associates with your yard/his potty, that you could take with you on walks for a while, until he gets used to it. Just rub a rag where he's gone, dirt and all, and put it at the places he stops to sniff. I have no idea if this works, but it might!!!

Hello, well Jackson is being a lot better in terms to his potty training and is now doing 99% out side. Loving the good weather at the moment so nice to get out for walks with him but means due to work we are out the door for 6:30am! Bring on the weekends when he lies in! And believe me he is a lazy bugger in mornings and will sleep forever if he could! When he is awake he is totally wired!! Another pic of my boy to show how big he is now! He was 2.2kg when we got him and now he is about 5kg

Well Jackson has gone from this to this! He is just a cheeky boy and very naughty at times, especially eating a PSP!! He only likes to listen to Si which is a bit of a problem when he is away most of the time, but we are slowly getting there and he is such a loving dog and we always enjoy cuddles.

Wow, he's grown! What a cutie! Si's the alpha male, so Jackson will listen to him 1st. Have you tried doing some training exercises with him to help him see you as a leader of the pack, also, not just Si? I bet it's nice having him as company while Si's gone.

I have tried training him on my own. He is ok when it's just me and him but when he gets distracted by another dog he is off and ignores me. As with Si he listens. The last few days he has been a lot better even had a dog encounter whilst off lead and he came bk when I called him! We may be getting somewhere! Just making sure he knows o have plenty of treats in pocket!
He got clipped by a van a couple of months bk after running after a dog he saw miles away! Luckily no damage was caused as it clipped his bk legs and spun him round ( absorbed shock) he just ran all the way home! I did not see the accident so expected him to be lying in middle of road! He was fine and I was an absolute mess!! The stress these animals put us through!!!!
