For the sake of trying to get an accurate count on the number of guinea pigs that die due to pregnancy or birthing complications, I woud appreciate any and all input. There is a lot of outrageous information out there- unbelievable statistics with no backing. Sadly, misinformation gets passed around the internet and eventually accepted as fact. What we would like to do is create a basis of fact in which a true statistic can be derived.
So, we want to gather as much information on GP pregnancies as possible- successful and unsuccessful.
Whether it was an intentional breeding or otherwise, the following information will be most helpful:
FOR EACH SEPERATE PREGNANCY-- * * * * * *
(SURVIVING: ) Your name: (first name only acceptable) Country of origin: Age of sow: Number of offspring: Number of surviving offspring to age of weaning: * * * * * *
(UNSURVIVING: ) Only for sows whose death was pregnancy or birhting related: Your name: (first name only acceptable) Country of origin: Age of sow: Believed/Known cause of death: Other possible health issues: Surving offspring if any: Surviving offspring to weaning if any: Other important information:
NOTE: This data is not intended to be used to condone breeding in any way.

Thank you.
Yes- you may PM me the information if you choose to keep it more anonymous. Your name will not be used- it is for the sake of sorting out the possibility of double posts- as I posted this questionaire on several different forums.
Thanks to all who help ahead of time!

Actually since we do not advocate breeding on this forum... I don;t think its such a good idea. How do you know the stats are unfounded? why do you want to disprove them? Why would people deterring people from breeding for fun annoy anyone. That has to be a good thing... even from a breeders point of view. Hope you are not talking about Cavy spirit. That site rocks and Teresa knows her stuff
Having lost a pig (who also lost 3 out of 5 of his siblings) I know there is a whole mine field around this... Not just complications in birth (fusing of hip bones in sows 1+ that have not been bred resulting in need for section), toxemea, then in weaning, mastitis then even after birth the possibility of problems with babies bred by folk who don;t know what they are doing. I know of a baby born dead with 2 heads. Its no joke. Then what do you do with the boar? A breeding boar is unlikely to accept another boar & if nuetered may well still pester the sow and make her life a misery. So if you are researching looking into those things too not just mother mortality

I think I've already requested that. I just want to point out, though, that this is not a discussion on breeding- it is a discussion on pregnancy and birth- which happens way too often by accident or ignorance. Education is the key- and that is why we are trying to gather this information.

Ok Jenna I respect that. Its just I have seen the very mention of the word breeding, pregnany, birth turn ugly & we don;t want that for this forum. So best to gather the info only by PM. Hope you find what you need though
