My fiance is great about my passion for small pets. He supports my rat rescue 100% we just took in two baby mice. One has an eye infection the other I just couldn't leave behind.

That is great Bootygurl love, I love rats but have never had one as a pet, mice are adorable too. Something definite for the future.

Animals are so lucky to have people like you who care enough to take them in when they are sick

Well he was in a feeder bin so no one cared if he was sick, as he was doomed to be food. I just couldn't in my right mind and heart leave him to suffer an eye infection and then the wrath of a snake. I can't save all the feeder mice at work but I can make their time there as though they were pets. They get all the same effort as any other animal sold in our store. I handle them, rub their bellies, give them treats of fresh veggies and fruit. I have started to save the papertowel and toilet paper rolls for them to snuggle in and they love it. I wish from my phone I could figure out how to upload photos of the mice. They were happily crawling on me this afternoon and being brave and exploring

You are so wonderful love, I wish I could adopt some too. I am glad they are getting treats and lots of fuss.

I wish all pet stores had employees like you. Often they are just passing through the job market, and only want a paycheck. Those animals are lucky to have you

I love my job! I get to walk around with baby rats in my pocket. I get food samples for my guys to taste test, I get to bring my 3 big boys (rats) to work when I work short weekday shifts (less busy and less time for them to get into trouble) lol

Pet stores should be the source of the best, non medical information about all the pets they sell. Nothing against high school and college kids, but they are just trying to earn spending money, and don't really care how they do it, as long as the hours and conditions are decent. I've belonged to forums that basically tossed people off the forum, if they bought a pet at a pet store. Yes, rescues are overloaded and under funded, and need all the help they can get, but most pet stores are just holding cells full of animals, and an endless supply of miniature human clothes to dress them in. The employees are competent to say which outfit goes best with the buyers outfit, but not which food to buy or supplies to use. We've had a few dedicated pet store employees over the years, and it's great to meet another one

Our store is great that way. Everyone has their passion for learning everything they can and getting over their fears or misconception about every animal we provide care for. My co-worker Alyssa had never held an adult rat before so I took my 3 big boys in for her to see what fully trained, full grown big male rats are like and now she's hooked on rat love. She also hadn't seen hairless animals til she worked there either. Now she's seen it all and respects them all differently now Petsmart/PETCO/Superpet whatever you might have around thats more of a big box store ia only looking for good sales people to make money. Not necessarily pet lovers which baffles me. I worked at Petsmart for 2.5 yrs and everything I tried to bring up something that would enhance the lives of the animals or ensure they are definitely going to good homes I got shut down at some point in trying to find someone higher up to help. They have so-called "vet experts" in their main office that you are supposed to be able to contact directly to ask about our care guides, which are what we give out to people doing their homework about what pet is right for them and what they will need. I have Hermit Crabs among my zoo and their care guide says to line their terrarium with aquarium gravel or calcium sand (These which is very dry and does not hold moisture) These are creatures that burrow (in the wild in moist sand or dirt/coconut fibre) and molt their exoskeleton revealing a very soft delicate new exoskeleton. Now tell me if you have sensitive skin are you going to want moist dirt or dry gravel touching your soft skin? I tried to call the exotic pet "expert" and he knew NOTHING about hermit crabs. He's like 'well its a cheaper alternative to expensive sand/soil and therefore its an easier sell' not when people keep coming back with dead crabs and these animals are suffering horrible painful slow deaths and people are returning products that are now garbage for having been used. I cannot imagine what their carbon footprint is!! Anyway enough of my ranting...don't shop at Petsmart unless its an emergency in my opinion! Shop smaller private/franchise stores. #1 they can likely order things for you, they are more likely to care about their animals as well as whats good for yours! Or at least willing to learn how to better help you!

We have both chain pet stores, and I don't even go there anymore. For one thing, they all started selling snakes, and I'm terrified of snakes. They even put them on display on the main aisle, so there's no avoiding them. Once I know they are in the store, I can't make myself go in the door, so no good for me. We have one small mom and pop pet store, but they don't even put hay in the guinea pig cages, which upsets me. I'm glad your store cares about the animals, and doesn't just say everything they do is company police, not open to discussion.

So baby girl is home. I am playing with names right now. Something equally cute and unique as Booty and that goes with it. Thinking Tootsie, Tata, or Fanny. We snuggled on the couch for a while. They snuggled and purred and chatted. No low pitch chatters so I'm positive they'll be a good match. I think Booty was lonely and baby girl has always had other pigs around so she won't want to be alone. They are eating hay in their cages side by side chattering. Keep sticking their noses over at each other. I am not worried about a quarantine period as her breathing is clear, eyes, nose and skin looka great. She's been peed on by someone but we'll get her cleaned up. She's super sweet already and loooves her bum petted. Very talkative about her enjoyment of that haha The degus know there is a newcomer so they'll meet over the weekend once baby has had time to settle in. She's quite small and I'm thinking she must be 3 months not 6! She's just over half the size of Booty. Length and width. Seems a bit skinny but we'll fix that quickly!

Tootsie is cute - I'd not go for Fanny myself as over here it's not a cute term for bottom, but instead means front bottom! Hope the piggy bonding continues!

I understood it meant bum too. We went with Chi-Chi which is a word I used when I was little for bum. Which Booty also means so its working She's an absolute joy to have. Her and Booty have been chatting a lot and her daddy just loves snuggling with her.

Chi-Chi sounds cute! Sounds like she is settling in well too.
I remember an American friend coming over when we were teenagers and calling her 'bum bag' a 'fanny pack' - oh that did make us howl!

Thats what we call them on this side of the pond. Lol Fanny Packs were all the rage in the 80s/early 90s here. They tried to make a comeback but they're just not attractive haha
