My girls are getting a super sized new house! I am getting a second C&C cage from my boss who sadly lost her 3 piggies all in one week. I will be sanitizing everything thoroughly. She had one furry and two skinnies. Not sure what happened but she bought a different food on a bulk size bag. We have contacted the manufacturer to see if the bag can be tested for contamination.
She has decided no more piggies. So we will get all her supplies. I'm super excited to put it together and make a nice big cage for my girls!

I feel so badly for your boss. Losing one pig is heartbreaking, but three, and so close together I'm glad you're getting the cage, and more pigs will get to enjoy the space. I can't wait to see pictures

Oh how awful for your boss to lose all three pigs so suddenly like that. If it was the food, it must have been toxic to take them all so quickly - I hope they agree to some kind of analysis to help your boss find out what happened.
That's great that your girls will be getting the lovely big cage though - I bet they'll love it.

Well I think because its coming from an educated employee I believe they will test for contamination. I feed mine a mix of Oxbow and our brand so I tossed our brand into the freezer until the analysis is done

I hope they'll test it. A friend in the UK lost her babies in a super short time like that, too, and it was contaminated food. Salmonella, if I remember correctly.

You wonder how a vegetarian food can have salmonella levels high enough to make the animals so sick!?

When I was vegetarian, I had a friend who would always remind me you can get salmonella from mushrooms - just to let me know I wasn't safe because I wasn't eating chicken (which I did get a terrible bout of salmonella from once)?! Not that mushrooms are in guinea pig food anyway, so I'm not sure what my point is...
I guess it only takes one item in the chain to become contaminated by animal or person at some point. I'd guess it wouldn't even have to be significantly contaminated to cause massive problems for animals like guinea pigs whose digestive systems are so sensitive.
A scary thought really.

There really is no escaping salmonella. All foods we don't grow ourselves, pick and eat, go through a process that has so many opportunities for salmonella to get onto and into food. It's kind of sad that we spend so much on medical treatments for the negative effects, but so little on stopping the salmonella. My mother was an inspector in a chicken processing plant. All she had to do was clock in, read a book for a few hours, and clock out. She didn't inspect anything, and she didn't know anything about the process. It was covering the governments butt to be able to show a time sheet for an inspector on the premises, nothing more. It's only when enough people get sick, that products are pulled from stores, recalled from consumers, processing plants are totally checked and closed when the problem is found, or soil samples are taken from all the fields, and the problem is found. It would be so easy to stop it, but we don't.
Has everyone seen the latest dietary guideline changes for the US, saying it's okay to eat saturated fats, as clogged arteries are genetic. We are still discouraged from eating a lot of fatty foods because of the whole weight issue, but all these years we cut out saturated fats, to the point of NYC even banning the use of lard in baked goods.
It's also been decided that certain types of cholesterol in foods is actually good for us. Eggs and shellfish are back on the approved foods list.
Peanut butter caused cancer in lab rats, so we weren't supposed to eat that for years. It just never stops. I think the credibility of those telling us what we should and shouldn't eat is lacking. Add to that the extreme prices of the "good food," the lack of any of those good foods in the foods handed out to the poor, and the inability of the government to even prove those foods don't have GMOs, salmonella and other problems, and we might as well go out for a burger.

Sadly today I had to make the tough decision to rehome the piggies. I am in the process of separating from my partner of 4 years. And I cannot afford the space to house all my animals. They went to a wonderful home! I can visit whenever I want. And I know they'll be thoroughly loved and cared for. They will also still have rat friends around as they have 2 girl rats! They also had another gp but upon my inspection she was a he so they are going to save and neuter him so he can join the girls as their big hunky man friend. And he's a BIG hunk! He's handsome and a hefty boy! But he's just taking in all the goodies he never got with his old owner who limited him to 1/4c of gp mix a day! And one handful of hay a WEEK! So now he's been pigging out on all the special treats! And I can't blame him. I am sad but I know it was what was best for them! I am also rehoming some of the rats and reducing my numbers so when I move I'm not taking as many into half the space. I will still be active here I hope

I'm sorry to hear that. It's a huge fear of mine - having to let go of my pets. When I had to leave my old house (because of a separation) I moved into an apartment with two cats and two guinea pigs. It was so hard to find a place that would allow pets and the guinea pigs for sure was a no no. I brought them anyway and just have to keep it a secret that I have them. It sucks, but giving them up would be much harder. I feel for you, but I'm happy that you found them a good home.

I am so sorry to hear this darling, what a tough decision to have to make. Two of the piggies we have now was due to a lady moving abroad and not being able to take them with her. I am glad they have found a lovely home and you will still be able to see them.

I'm so sorry you have to do that. We get our animals because we love them, and parting with them is so hard. I'm glad you can visit them, and that you know they will be well loved and cared for. Good luck with your new situation. I'm sorry it didn't work out. Hugs

So sorry to hear about you and your partner splitting, and that the move will mean you can't keep all your furry family. Sounds like the pigs have a wonderful new home though, and it's great you'll still be able to see them. Good luck finding the ratties equally lovely new homes, and please do stick around and keep us posted with how you're doing and what you're up to.

I'm advocating for the humane society still and helping with rescues and transportation. I just helped with a hoarding situation and I saw the worst case of a neglected rabbit this week I have ever seen but at least he's in a new loving home with his buddy who is younger and clearly hadn't had as much time to show signs of the neglect except a few longer toenails. This poor boy had a testicle outside of his body, a penis plug, nails as long as my pinky finger (wish I'd thought to take photos) but I was so worried about remedying what I could asap. My friend is a groomer and helped me cut his nails and I cleaned and disinfected his man parts. I want to try to draw a picture of what his manpart area looked like.
I am still having some hard days but each time I feel ready to throw in the towel I look into my fuzzy friends eyes and know if I'm not there they wouldn't be safe either in most cases. Another girl has moved into Sarnia who wants to open a rescue so I will advocate for her and have someone helping in town that can take in the rats I can't. The piggies are doing great! They have a new boyfriend who will move in after his neuter. He's a BIG boy! I knew as soon as I saw him something was off him being named Muffy lol. Either SHE was pregnant or it was a HE. I flipped him over (which he loved surprisingly) and wasn't long in seeing the obvious 'manliness'

I'm glad you're still able to carry on helping the furries, even if it's in slightly different ways with you having less space at home. The poor bun, that hoarding case sounds awful. I hope he's feeling better very soon, and glad to hear he and his buddy already have a great new home.
Glad the pigs are doing well, and hope that you carry on getting along okay despite some rough days and hope those get less and less as time goes on.

I think you are doing brilliantly love, I am so pleased you are able to help with the furries too and that the piggies are doing really well. Thank you for helping that dear poor little bunny, how can anyone mistreat an animal like this, it makes my blood boil?
