First of all thank you so much for taking the time to read this as it is going to be a very long post.
My guinea pig Bella just recently died on Wednesday 16th September 2015 at 5.50am & I’m responsible for her death & I can’t stop feeling so guilty & crying for her.
I have five other guinea pigs & Bella shared her cage with 2 of them & my other 3 share a cage together.
Bella was a part long hair piggie with very soft cream & white fur & was one of the friendliest little animals I have ever known.
She always gave a very loud purr whenever I held her or stroked her & always came up to me when I called her name & she was always pop corning especially when I put her on my bed.
She also had the loudest wheek of all my piggies & would use it to deafen me if I didn’t get her food to her fast enough & then she would snatch the food out my hand & give a massive purr.
I have both cages in my bedroom with me and they are in the house all year round but whenever there is nice weather I put them in the run so they can have a day outside on the grass.
Bella never had any health problems or needed to go to the vet once in her entire life.
Ok so about a week or so ago either on the 7th or 8th of September, my other guinea pig Furgason who Bella lived with decided to start chewing off Bella’s fur in the area on her back just above her tail bone.
Now Furgason has done this to Bella in the past & unfortunately I couldn’t separate them because I didn’t have anywhere else to put her & she didn't get along some of my other piggies so well but Bella’s fur would just grow back in & she never seemed bothered by this.
But this time Furgason bit off a little too much & Bella ended up with a bold patch but because the weather has been reasonably warm lately & because she lives indoors, I didn't think it would cause her any harm.
Anyway apart from her missing patch of fur, Bella then continued to be her normal happy self for the rest of the week & even had a good day on the grass with my other piggies on Friday.
She then continued to be fine on Saturday & Sunday & on Sunday night she had a treat with my other piggies of carrots & corn on the cob before going to bed.
But then when I got up on Monday morning she was in the corner of the cage all puffed up & didn't want to eat or drink.
I thought she was just in a sulk because she didn't like the guinea pig food I gave her for brekki (the usual type I get was out of stock) as my older 2 guinea pigs have been like this when I have gotten them a different kind of food in the past but then made a full recovery within a day so I just assumed she would be fine & I went to work as normal.
When I got home in the evening she was still the same & I had her out on my floor for a runabout with the other piggies whilst I cleaned her cage & then put them all to bed as usual then went to bed myself.
Then next morning (Tuesday 15th) she was looking a bit better but still not eating.
My parents had both gone out & I had to go to work so I only had time to hold Bella for a couple minutes before leaving for work.
I then got back home after 6pm & Bella still was the same so I had her on my bed for a couple of hours whilst watching a DVD & when my mum came in my room, Bella perked up a bit & wondered across my bed towards my mum because she wanted to be picked up so she could go back in to her cage.
I then went to bed.
Then I was suddenly woken up at about 2:45am (now Wed 16th) by a very loud wheezing sound so I put my light on & saw it was coming from Bella so I took her out of the cage & her chin was soaking wet & she felt cold so I put her on my bed & got a cloth to wipe her chin but I didn't wipe too hard as she felt very weak.
She also kept giving a very loud cough every so often & had stuff coming out of her mouth every time she did.
I then quickly got dressed & then got all & then went downstairs & cut up a banana as it was one of Bella’s favourite treats & then I placed the banana on my bed & got all of my other piggies out & put them on my bed with Bella so they could be with her.
Bella didn’t take any notice of the banana & I took some photos of her with the other piggies all together & some videos of them (I have lots of photos & videos of all my piggies from the very first day that I bought them home) but then Bella suddenly went on to her side & could no longer stand up so I woke my mum up to come & see her & my mum sat on my bed with my piggies & held Bella for a few minutes & I told her that she still didn’t want to eat & that she had a bad cough.
My mum then said to check her teeth just in case it was why she couldn’t eat so my mum then held her up so I could look at her teeth but they were fine so that wasn’t the problem.
My mum then stayed with my piggies whilst I put some bedding in their cages because they needed cleaned out so I wanted them to have a dry area to sleep on & I then put them all back & also put Bella back in the cage aswell.
My mum then went back to bed & I also tried to go back to sleep but Bella’s wheezing was getting loud again so I got her back out of the cage & she could no longer squeak but she made a moaning sound as I lifted her up.
I then got back in to bed with her & held her against my tummy to try & make her feel a bit warmer & she even tried to nudge her way under my arm.
She stayed quite but then after a couple minutes I lifted her up but she wasn’t moving so I held her to my ear & I couldn’t hear a heartbeat or anything else.
I then placed her on my bed & her eyes had sunk in & were lifeless.
I then realised that she had gone so I woke my mum back up to check her & my mum said she must have been drowsy & gone peacefully whilst I was holding her as she didn’t have a fit or squeak in pain before going (I have had guinea pigs & rabbits give a sharp squeak whilst having a heart attack in the past).
My mum then wrapped her in some tissue & then put her on my floor next to the piggie cages & then I was up for the rest of the night crying.
Later on in the morning when I got back out of bed, Bella had gone into full rigor & her eyes had stared to cloud.
My mum then helped me to bury her out in the back garden at about 9.15am.
All I had to do before I went to work on Tuesday morning was phone the vet & then leave a note asking my Dad to take her whilst I was at work & then she could have gotten some medicine before she got any worse or if I had realised that her bold patch would cause her to catch a chill then I would have gave her more bedding before going to bed on Sunday night.
But no.
Because of my lack of thinking I caused her to lose her life.
She was only a young piggie as she had only just turned 4 on 17th June 2015 & she could have had another 2 or 3 years but I took them away from her.
All I can think about is how uncomfortable she must have felt during her last few hours.
I’m sorry to keep going on but I desperately needed to explain what happed to someone & I can’t stop repeating her final moments in my head & even cried at work yesterday because of it.
Thanks again for reading.
