I know I am an old fart and don't keep up with the songs that are popular now but I just had to mention this. I heard the Song "Let's Get It On Like Marvin Gaye" today and I think it is years since I have been so smitten with a song. God it is sexy and just wonderful. It really makes me want, no positively yearn to be young again and out there and knowing this is not possible is really painful when I hear this song. I just wanted to know if my friends like it too.

I'm glad you enjoyed hearing the song Jo, it sounds like a bittersweet sort of feeling - loving the song but it stirring up difficult feelings.
It's a song I like listening to too - it's a bit cheesy but it's a great song! I'll post a link to it, but don't listen to it if it's going to make you feel sad as I don't want to ruin your New Year's Eve!

Oh dear. Thank you for your kind reply Bean but it seems yours is the only one I am going to get in connection with the song I mentioned. I bet everyone thinks I am a real knob now for liking this record and are being politely quiet LOL!! Hugs JO xx

Totally wrong, Jo. I danced to Marvin Gaye in high school. He and Smokey Robinson were two of my favorites

Not at all Jo! Although, if you heard some of the music I like, you might back away slowly rather than sit and listen to it with me! I'm one of the rare people who thinks the 80s had a lot to offer musically haha!
We were playing a 'spot the intro' game yesterday with my family (where you hear the first few seconds of a song and have to name it) - it was good fun but so frustrating when you knew something was familiar but couldn't name it in time! My husband and I get really competitive with things like that and were on different teams so I think my parents were a bit disturbed by how seriously we took it! (Luckily I won!)

That sounds like a cool game. Did you put the intro clips together yourself?

This was a 'professional' one which I received as a gift. It was bought for me as the kids like to play it when we have people round - they usually pick music from our system (we have all our music on a server) but although our collection is vast (and we've forgotten half of what's on it) it does give us a slight advantage!
So this game was good as no one had any idea what was coming up, but you can't really play it more than once! We're going to a new year's day party later, so I think I will take it along and see how other people do!

I've never seen this kind of thing. Is it hardware or software? Sounds like the kind of game you could play online to waste away an afternoon

Sorry, when I said professional, I just meant 'not made by me' - I've probably made it sound more impressive than a CD of song intros and an answer sheet! This is the one we have - my sister picked it up in a charity shop and I expect they do the rounds there frequently as you can't really play it more than once! But please, if you find one online, don't tell me about it as I could easily spend an afternoon playing it and have recently resolved to be more productive (after the holidays anyway...)!

I got one of those intros stuck in my head the other day, and it drove me nuts all day trying to place it. When I try to sing it for hubby, it never sounds the same.

Thank you so much Bean love for the track, it is beautiful. Yes, it does stir up all sorts of feelings, one being that the song reminds me of what I have never had and never will have if you know what I am talking about and bittersweet is a great way of describing it. I think the 80's gave us a lot too especially the lovely New Wave guys with their long hair who also gave us some pretty cool songs. Thanks Piggles love, I thought I had made myself look rather a chump, thanks for the assurances. That sounds like a really good game Bean love, they have something similar on our local radio station where they play the first beat of a song and listeners have to try and name the song. It is quite difficult sometimes.

No chump, Jo, just a different era than some people. We were out of college and working adults in the 80s, married, having children or whatever we were doing with our lives. My daughter was born in '81, so she doesn't remember those songs as anything but golden oldies, if she heard them at all. I wasn't around for the Jitterbug era, or the Flapper era, but I remember older people talking about them as the best of days. I think it's nice that each era has it's own fashion, music and trends. Some of them are good for all ages, others are best left for the younger people.

Thank you Piggles love. I would love to have been around in the fifties because I love rock and rock and jiving (when I could). Also jitterbugging to Glenn Miller also appeals very much to me. I too remember older friends and relatives talking about the 1920's onwards. There was also a picture of my auntie during the 20's with the head band and long cigarette holder. Says it all really.

I watch the Miss Fisher Mysteries, set in 1920 Australia, and while I love the fashions on her perfect little body, I can't imagine how they would have looked on me. Also, class and religion were huge issues back then. People didn't step outside of their station in life, and Catholics and Protestants did not mix. Also different cultures didn't mix. Each stayed in their own neighborhood, and weren't welcome in most other neighborhoods. Racism was a big issue. I do love the music of that era, and how simple the words were, that people thought were so outrageous back then I wonder what most of the flappers would think of the sex on stage musical performances we have now

Ha ha, Piggles love, I often think of people from previous ages looking down and being shocked about how things are now. The flappers thought they were so "modern" and liberated.
I love things set in these times too Piggles love but you are absolutely right about everything you say. The music may have been nice as were the fashions, but many of the other things like those you mention were all wrong.

That's really the theme of The Murdoch Mysteries. They use murders set in turn of the century Toronto as a showcase for his brilliant detective skills, but also for all the contraptions he creates, all of which we all use regularly now, and for all the women's issues such as contraception being illegal, no vote for women, the fact that Murdoch will never get promoted because he's Catholic, etc. The female stars wear the most beautiful clothes, so feminine and so freaking useless in todays society! It's like wearing a formal gown to the supermarket. Try getting into a jacked up SUV in a long, tight skirt, lol

I love the Murdoch theme too hun, it is so appropriate. Yes, I love the clothes the ladies wear too, I have always wanted to dress like that but have been told that it is not very comfortable and you are right, not very practical either.
