Oh no! Ouch! You need to get a styptic pencil or sometimes called styptic stick. You can go right now to the drug store to buy one. They are inexpensive and you will find it in the "shaving cream or razor" section of the store. Many times when men cut them selfs shaving they will apply the styptic stick to the cut to stop the bleeding. One stick will last a lifetime just about. I'm so sorry this happened, did your piggy yelp out in pain? Was your mom cutting with sharp clippers? It is best to only cut VERY SMALL amounts at a time and NEVER CUT INTO THE BLOOD or quick of the nail. I know it is very hard to see this blood supply to the nail in black nails but it is very easy to see in white nails. I'm sure you feel horrible but it's not the end of the world. It happens....but only ONCE! Make sure you apply the stick as directed but you really need to get the bleeding stopped. You don't want it to get infected. See a vet if there are any signs of infection like swelling or feeling hot to the touch. How far down in the nail did she cut? Make sure you give extra love and cuddle time along with some treats to your piggy. I'm sure this was very traumatizing to him/her....especially when you reacted with PANIC! for more information : www.guinealynx.com/nails.html

Okay, it seems serious. I think you might have cut into her quick, which is the blood vessel in the nail. If it's "gushing out blood", that is serious. Firstly, apply antiseptic (eg. Dettol) spray to the cut, or cream if you don't have spray. She'll probably need to see a vet ASAP, but for now you need to keep applying pressure (not too much) with a paper towel, tissue, towel or toilet paper until the bleeding stops or you can get her to a vet. As it is a foot there is a high chance of infection so I'd suggest a vet visit. She might need oral antibiotics to prevent infection. Hope all is well, keep us updated. EDIT: Sorry Val, we were posting at the same time.

To stop the bleeding I use cornflour or something like that, there are special things that you can get that will do that and have the antiseptic powder in them ...
I did that to my piggy the other day, used the corn flour and it helped create a seal to stop the bleeding and then I applied to antiseptic to it ...

thx so much!! the blood has gone down quite a bit now, and she rests in her cage. my mom said we might have antiseptic, and if we don't we'll go down to the drugstore to get that styptic pencil.
will be back!

oh i'm sorry i made you all worry! i didn't mean to panic...it's just that Honey's survived through all my other pig's deaths, and she is deeply important to me. i would be devastated if i lost her. but she is doing much better. i suppose i frightened her myself, and she is simply exhasted. after posting i went to check on her nail and it's no longer bleeding and all better.... OMG i'm so sorry i made you all worry!! i'm usually able to keep my nerve pretty well (our pets get into trouble from time to time) but somehow i lost it. i guess i was just worried that i might not be able to take her to the vet because i didn't know any exoctic vets in my area... oh, but thx so much, everyone! sorry again that i put you all in such a scare!! also: i was very sure that my mom didn't cut to close to the quick. she was on the very last nail, and Honey pulled away at the last second. next time i'll be sure to take her to the vet to get her nails clipped! i only need a couple dollars more!

You did really well to only clip 1 nail, it happens from time to time, don't panic, it happens to us all .. put a brick in her cage near the water bottle and that will help her file her nails down so she doesn't have to have that done so much ...

If this happens to anyone else, a good tip like Piparmaru already mentioned si to use cornflour or ordinary flour, this stops the bleeding very effectively. Just press it against the wound. I'm glad Honey is fine

Phew, I just saw this thread and was very worried about Honey It's very scary when things like this happen - when the guinea pigs last had their nails cut in the vets', Bobby's nail was cut into the quick. The blood is quite alarming. I third the suggestion of flour. I'm glad Honey is okay now, she's very brave
