It looks like I'll be getting Mimi seen by the vet again. She's just as active as ever, and eating plenty, but when she "wheeks" it sounds so hoarse and weak. I'm hoping she'll be fine.

Did it get dry in the house, or did you change hay, anything that might be giving her dryness or allergies? I have a humidfier for the piggy room, and try to keep the humidity level at least 40%. Much below that the pigs get itchy and sneeze. I hope she's okay!

No need for a humidifier here, we've plenty of humidity in Alabama! In addition, the doc doesn't seem to think it's allergies. So when I went back, the vet did a very thorough inspection of Mimi, and couldn't find anything wrong (he said everything sounded perfectly clear), except that she's lost too much weight (1/4 lb.). Apparently my scale hasn't been giving accurate readings or I would've noticed this myself- time for a new one, I guess! He gave her a B12 shot, steroid, and an anti-inflammatory oral medication to be given once daily, with the instruction to keep a close watch and see if there's any improvement or anything. I had to call back today because she definitely hasn't gone downhill, but she has stayed the same with no improvement, so it's back to the vet tomorrow for x-rays to see if something funky is up. Does anyone else have experience with anything like this? All of my other girls are perfectly healthy, happy piggers. I feel helpless that I can't seem to get Mimi to stay well for longer than a month or so.

That sounds distressing for you I'm afraid I have no wisdom to add. I hope the vet can help you figure out what's wrong and work towards getting it sorted. Not knowing what's up is the worst thing!

Hey guys. Mimi seems good today. She has quite the appetite on her, I just got done giving her Critical Care- I have to fight to get the syringe away! I'm having to supplement her normal eating habits to get her weight up. Doc did the x-rays, and showed us how the bones around her inner ear are abnormally large from frequent irritation (this whole thing started with an inner ear infection months ago, but the other exotic vet at this location had cleared her. Needless to say, I won't be trusting him again). Lungs and everything else looked near perfect. The vet was very pleased with that. Now she's on Baytril ear drops twice a day, Baytril oral medicine twice a day, eye ointment applied as needed (for her bad eye that got injured a while back- have to keep it moist), and an anti-inflammatory once a day. I'm also syringe-feeding her twice a day. And don't worry, she'll be getting the probiotics, too. Mimi is a tough little guinea...

Glad the doc found a problem. While it's great to have really healthy pigs, when we know something is wrong, it's so worrisome when the vet can't find anything. Don't forget to give her a probiotic. Petco has Bene bac, which will rebuild the good gut flora the Baytril kills. All digits crossed for her to make a complete recovery!

You are so right 3piggles love, if they can;t find anything they cannot put it right and it is more worrying.

Have to go back to the vet today. Mimi is now under a pound despite our best efforts of hand feeding. She is not doing well at all so we are going to learn how to give her the injections to keep her fluids up.
I'll do whatever it takes for her to get well, but I'm not convinced she'll come back from this... Poor baby, I wish she had better health.

Just thought I'd give you guys a quick update. It really looked like Mimi was going to pass Sunday- I wasn't sure she would make it until Monday... We had to seriously talk about the possibility of putting her down, but Monday she decided that she isn't done fighting. Vet gave her a different antibiotic as a last effort and we have been constantly nursing her. Well, we've been doing that for over a month now. He even said that if she had been in anyone else's care, she probably wouldn't have made it this long. And the result is a wonderful 6 oz. weight gain, and a much livelier Mimi! I really think she just might pull through. I'm very pleased, but still cautious and will continue the Critical Care/Bene-bac/Pedialyte regimen.

Sounds like a winning combination for a sick girl, and the loving, caring parents she needs to pull through. All digits crossed for her to make it. Don't be surprised if she always needs a bit of help, as surviving one major illness can leave their immune systems weakened. She may need extra C and other vitamins and nutrients, just to compensate. Pulling for you and her

That's great news. Put an eighth of a vitamin C tablet in the water bottle, that may help. Keep up the good work x

Yesterday morning, Mimi was great. Excellent appetite, super bright, and great weight.
So then we went out for the day, after giving her the morning feeding. When we got back, she was on her side in the middle of the cage with dried blood on her nose and in her mouth.
We knew it was the end, so we rushed her to the ER to try to end the suffering for her. She passed away before they even got the needle in.
I hope you have peace now, little Mimi girl.
